Chapter 4

Mikaela

I sat with my hands clasped, as August took his seat next to me. We were at his lawyer's office to discuss the piece of shit lawsuit that Helena's family had brought against me.

"Aight Megan, so just tell us straight whatchu think bout all' this?" August said getting to the point.

She took a small sigh as she sat in front of her desk.

"Well first off, suicidal lawsuits for wrongful death are the hardest to prosecute. So believe me , the Duncan's are gonna have one hell of a time presenting this to the judge," Megan began as she flipped closed a folder

"So the entire thing could fall through?" I asked

"No, not fall through. We're still going to have to go to court, and hear they're side of the story. Because you did hit Ms Duncan, I'm sure they're gonna have some medical reports saying you caused her medical issues. That's when things get tricky" she went on

"Tricky how?" August went on to ask

"If they have proof of this. Then the judge could ask us to settle...I don't think they would receive the full amount they're asking for, but any medical fees that aren't paid entirely they could ask you to cover. That could be well into 1 million if I know these prosecutors well"

August leaned back exhaling, " this is sum bullshit"

"And what about this prison time?" I asked Megan.

"Well Ms Duncan is deceased. Once again it all comes back to how well they can prove through medical records you had a role in causing it," Megan replied

"And what's the max time I could end up serving?"

She looked down for a second, " worst case scenario, involuntary manslaughter which is Four years"

I ran a hand through my hair, processing everything. " I have a 2 year old daughter. I can't....I can't miss 4 years of her life,"

"Don't worry Ms. Montgomery. My team and I will fight this preposterous claim and win," she said to me

"So what's ya plan?" August interjected

"For one. Ms Duncan took her life because of not being able to work. Mikaela didnt bar her from working. And since she basically stole intellectual property from you two which forced your hand in firing her. I'm sure they'll either remove that part from the suit or helena's character will look very poorly in the eyes of the judge and jury. Most families never want the bad deeds of a deceased loved one to come across in court"

August silently nodded as he listened.

"Also Ms Duncan took her life two years after that small incident happened where you hit her, I'm sure witnesses will corroborate it was one punch. Plus you were pregnant so under emotional distress," Megan continued

"Yeah. Not to mention she showed up univited to that party when I had already fired her ass," August interjected

"Lastly, we should counter-sue them. I understand after the altercation Mikaela ended up losing one of your babies. No jury will convict you once we show them that you were the victim in all of this," Megan finished.

I looked up at her seeing that she looked very confident in this case.

"Naww. We ain't bringin' ma dead daughter into this," August said calmly with his hands clasped under his chin.

Megan was taken a back. "Mr Alsina, you might want to reconsider that. We're using-"

"I said ta keep Addy outta this," he cut her off and said sternly
