What you, ooh, uh, what you do?

Made a move, coulda made a move

If I knew I'd be with you

Is it too late to pursue?

Everyone had known. They had always known.

It would've been weirder if they hadn't, since it was so blatantly obvious.

(Y/N) (L/N) had had feelings for Varian.

You had went out of your way to talk to him, had walked longer paths just to catch a glimpse of him and even Varian hadn't been all that clueless about your feelings. He had simply denied them, always having told himself that no, you didn't like him.

And no, he didn't like you.

Plus, he had had his eyes elsewhere, on an upperclassman, who he had known was out of his reach, so he had pretended to be oblivious to any advances, although he wouldn't have called them that. Friendly flirtation, is what he had used to refer to it.

Anyone who knew you tried to talk you out of it, since they had found it painful to watch you, their friend, fall so deeply for someone who hadn't shown any care for you or your feelings.

And it had been painful for you too.

While you were ever the go-lucky girl, you had been aware that he didn't feel the same.

You just couldn't help it. Your heart had fluttered, your stomach had flipped and you had always jumped at the chance to talk to him.

So when he'd brush your affection off, deep inside a part of you had died.

But you hadn't given up for a long time. No, you couldn't.

The love you felt for him was suffocating. It stole your breath away and left you gasping for air, air you weren't going to get.

You just wanted him to love you back. Had that been too much to ask for?

Had it been that selfish? To want to feel his love?

But whether it was or not, you craved his attention. Any shred of attention would've sufficed.

So, as if you were drowning, you clung onto the little bit of 'air' you were given.

But that hadn't been enough.

And it would've never been enough.

But slowly yet surely, your feelings had faded.

You didn't approach him anymore.

You stopped going out of your way to do anything for him.

It was as if... you had forgotten about him completely.

And there was a reason for that.

You had found another love. Someone who loved you back.

And all of a sudden, you could breathe freely.

This new love fixed the broken parts Varian had left behind, mended your wounds, made you smile and laugh - and most importantly of all, love.

You had given your all to Varian. And he had taken, but never given back.

Only taken, taken, taken.

But this person was different - they devoted their everything to you. They were hopelessly in love with you.

Varian should've been fine with this.

And he had been convinced that he would be fine with this.

Yet for unknown reasons, it felt like something was twisting and churning within him whenever he saw you with them.

It was excruciatingly painful.

But why was this?

Why did he feel like this?

He started to miss your presence. Your sunny smiles, your shy stare.

The way you'd look at him from across the hallway, the way you'd whisper to your friends.

The way you'd talk to him, to try and make him smile.

He missed it all.

And there was nothing Varian regretted more than having taken you for granted.

Because after the loss of your presence, he had noticed something.

A fondness for you had grown in his heart.

At first, he had attempted to ignore it.

But it was there, it was present, and it wasn't going to go away any time soon.

So the tables had turned on him.

Because then, he was the one staring longingly at you.

He was the one who was in love, but you were already taken.

He hated the feeling, and he hated himself even more for having let you go.

He had denied your feelings, and now Varian was in the same boat you used to be in.

But one fateful day, he spotted you crying on the bleachers.

That fateful day, he comforted you.

And neither of you knew, that that fateful day was going to change everything.
