I had been in the glade for a little over a month now. We had already gotten a new greenie a week ago and Minho was taking a break while I ran section eight on my own. We normally ran together even though it wasn't necessary. I think Minho stayed back for a gathering but i wasn't entirely sure.
I had been out in the maze for a couple hours now and was about to stop for lunch when I heard whirring noises that I was familiar with. I pulled out my machete and started creeping around trying to maintain my element of surprise as long as I could.
As I predicted there was a griever rolling slowly down one of the longer corridors in section eight. I checked my watch and figured if I was about to get chased I'd be able to get back on track by the time the doors would close.
I tightened my grip around the machete and pressed my back against the ivy covered wall. As I turned my head back from the griever to see another two grievers down the corridor I was in. I was completely visible now.
"Oh shuck!" I screamed as I ran for my life down the hall of the maze and turned a corner only to run down a dead end.
"Oh great. The one day I don't have Minho with me and the grievers decide to have a little fun. Well I assure them Im not an easy catch for anyone!" I screamed back at them as I started climbing the ivy on the walls.
My best bet was to jump over them and run back to the glade. It was a good thing I had already run the maze for the day and was heading back now.
I was about halfway up the wall when the grievers began climbing the wall. I was going to have to jump on the griever then jump of it to make a safe landing so I turned around and hung on the wall looking below me. I still had the machete in my hand but I felt like I was loosing grip on it so I took a really big risk and put it away in my running pack.
Driven by extreme hunger and fear I let go of the wall and fell fast landing on the griever. I tried to jump of but got grabbed by a claw around my arm. I felt it slicing into my arm as if it were a chain trying to cut of my circulation. I pulled out my machete again and hacked off the griever arm as it flung me down the hall in the exact direction I wanted to go.
I scrambled to my feet and ran like there was no tomorrow. Down hall after hall I continued to hear whirrs and clicks from the grievers. I looked back a few times and saw the grievers were still on my tail.
My arm had a large purple bruise on it where I was grabbed and my legs were covered in slime. I couldn't imagine the look of horror I was wearing right now. It definitely wasn't my first rodeo but it was the first time I could actually die because I was no where near the door.
I was still running for my life even after an hour and I had made no progress. I was far from the doors and the only way I could make it back in time was if I just ran in the direction of the door and let the grievers follow me.
Another hour later and I was still being chased by the grievers but I could tell I was coming closer to the doors by the height increase of the walls. My energy was depleting from eating nothing since the morning and burning calories I didn't have to burn.
I really didn't know how much longer i would have to be doing this but the grievers were about ten feet behind me when I finally turned the corner to the exit. I was at the end of the hall with the griever behind me when the doors began closing for the night.
I saw newt and gally at the end and a sudden burst of energy carried me all the way down the hall and past the doors just in time. I rand directly into gally and newt steadied me as I regained my footing.
"What happened out there?" Gally asked as he pointed at the doors to the maze.
"Are you blind? I've been running for my life for the last four hours from those things." I said breathlessly as newt pulled me into a quick hug.
