He traveled to Mondstadt once with his father to discuss business. He was about twelve years old and truth be told he didn't see any reason why he had to go.
His father was insistent on the matter however.
And, by the end of the trip, Ayato was quite grateful. Mainly because he fell in love at first sight with one of the girls of Mondstadt.
She wasn't exactly noticeable at first. In fact, with a quick look and one would think she wasn't anyone special at first.
But Ayato knew better.
He was going to be head of the Kamisato clan and Yashiro Commission someday after all. One must be able to tell these things.
Now in his early twenties, he finds that he couldn't live without her any longer.
He wanted to see her again, and luckily .. he was able to keep a good tab on her.
She was going to be stuck with him... one way, or another.
