Saturn
• • •Closely followed by my birthday was my least favourite day of the year, Mother's Day.
Although no distraction was strong enough to tear my thoughts from my mother, working at the shop seemed to be a good attempt. It was just me and Calvin today, just what I needed.
In the computer room, I sorted files. Next to me, Calvin crushed cardboard boxes from our latest shipment to be recycled. I became bored with the files quite quickly. Working was no longer serving as a sufficient distraction. Perhaps I would be able to convince Calvin to help distract me further.
I pushed in my chair, going over to watch him tear apart the boxes. The veins in his arms protruded from his skin, something I had never found to be attractive until I'd met Calvin. Now, they had me turned on in seconds.
"Why are you quiet?" Calvin asked, picking up on my strange demeanour.
I pulled myself up onto the desk, then beckoned him forward with one finger. Calvin stood from the floor. "Can we have sex?" I murmured, close to his ear.
Calvin glanced down at me, appearing to be experiencing a moral battle. "We're the only ones here, my love," he said softly, "I don't think that would be wise."
"That's exactly why it is wise," I said, "no one is going to come in today. It's a Sunday."
Calvin simply shook his head. "I can't trust that you'll keep quiet after what happened last time," he said, "you will have to have patience."
I groaned with annoyance. Calvin's eyes narrowed. "What's really bothering you, Saturn?" he asked.
I looked down at my shoes. "Can we go home?" I asked softly, avoiding his question.
"Answer me," Calvin insisted.
"I don't want to talk about it," I replied stubbornly, "can we just go home? I can't work right now."
"We're not leaving this room until you explain to me what's going on with you," Calvin said, his tone firm. He was scary when he got like this, so demanding and protective. But still, it was one of the things I loved about him most.
"Earth to Saturn," Calvin persisted, forcing me to look at him, "stop ignoring me."
I let out a sigh. "Fine," I mumbled, "today is Mother's Day. The worst day of the year, closely followed by Father's Day."
"But it isn't Mother's Day, darling," Calvin looked confused.
"It is where I come from," I said matter of factly, "and I don't have a mother, so this day is always extra terrible."
Suddenly, my mood made sense to Calvin. "Why don't you call your grandmother?" he suggested, "she deserves to be celebrated today. And I'm sure she would love to hear from you."
I had been putting off calling anyone from back home ever since I made it to Kenton. It was too painful, to recall the memories of when I still lived there. Even my grandma's occasional text messages were enough to bring a tear to my eye. I didn't think calling her today would help my already emotional state.
"She's probably asleep," I made up a quick excuse. Although it would have only been around five in the morning back at home, my grandma was most definitely not asleep. She had always been an early riser, I was sure that hadn't changed.
"Very well," Calvin murmured, putting one of his hands on my waist, "but I don't want you keeping things from me."
"Says you," I smirked, hooking my legs around him. As Calvin leaned in to kiss me, it seemed that I might actually get my wish after all.As our kiss deepened, I ran my hands down to the zipper of Calvin's jeans. If I tempted him enough, he would give me anything I wanted. Not to mention his sympathy for me on such a hard day. Perhaps this wouldn't be as difficult as I'd thought.
Just as I was sure I'd convinced him, Calvin grasped my wrist."Ah, ah," he muttered, "naughty girl. I thought I told you to have patience?"
"I have no patience," I exclaimed, "I need a distraction, Calvin. Can you please help me?"
"No, Saturn," Calvin snapped, "the only thing that distracts you from your issues shouldn't be having sex. We can do something else to help you."I shrank back at his outburst. Calvin rarely raised his voice at me. I removed my legs from around him and went back to my seat in front of the computer.
No tears, Saturn. He doesn't need anything else to feel guilty for.
After a moment, Calvin came to me like I knew he would. He rested his hands on my shoulders and rubbed them lovingly. "My apologies, darling," he murmured, "I didn't mean to get cross with you. I just can't help but feel like the only reason you want to be physical with me is to distract you from your worries."
I shook my head slowly. "That isn't true," I said softly, "just being around you helps to distract me."
"I'm glad," Calvin responded, "you do the same for me."
I leaned my head back against him and he held my neck to kiss me from behind. "I love you, Calvin," I murmured, pulling his arms over my shoulders and holding them.
"I love you more, princess," Calvin said, "and I will give you anything you need, in due time. I just think it would be best to talk through things first."
"Okay," I agreed, "are you going to call your Mom, then?""It isn't Mother's Day here," Calvin reminded me, "she might think that was odd."
"Oh yeah," I mumbled, "well, at least you have a family to call. I only have my idiot brother."
Calvin chuckled softly. "You are my entire family, Saturn," he said.
"But we aren't related," I pointed out, "that would be weird."
"No, not in that way," Calvin replied, "in the way that I will create my chosen family with you."
"Does that mean we can have babies?" I asked hopefully, drawing him in closer by tugging on his arms.
Calvin chuckled again. "Not yet, my love."
Not yet was better than never, I supposed. Having children was another thing I had never considered until meeting Calvin, along with marriage. Now, it all made sense. We would create a loving, safe family together. I would write and Calvin would be a well-respected lawyer. We would live in a grand home with high ceilings and a telescope to watch the stars.
"What are you thinking about?" Calvin mused, noticing the wistful grin that had appeared on my lips.
"You," I murmured, gazing up at him, "and us. Our future."
Calvin's expression matched mine. "What a lovely life we will have together."
He leaned in so close that his lips grazed mine. Once they touched, it was impossible for us not to kiss each other. I no longer wanted anything more from him, being with him was enough to temporarily distract me from my grief.
"You are more than enough to me, Calvin," I whispered once we broke apart.
Calvin tucked my loose hair behind my ear and stared adoringly into my eyes.
"You are everything to me, my Saturn."
