Saturn
• • •"Do you think Calvin likes sailboats?" Alice asked, as we browsed an antique shop for Calvin's new room.
"Maybe," I shrugged, glancing at the sailboat in a bottle, "I don't really know what he likes. He likes weird law books and dark, muted colours. That's about it."
"Boring," Lianna chimed in. She plucked a pristine tophat off of a display and tried it on for us. Alice snapped a picture on her phone, giggling wickedly.
"Delete that," Lianna said firmly.
"Alice, delete it!" Alice ran off, and Lianna let out a huff of frustration. I continued to wander down the aisles. I managed to compile a collection of small items in my arms, but I stopped in my tracks as I found the perfect addition. An old, handcrafted telescope. It was heavy, but I managed to carry it to the front desk.
"Excuse me?" I asked the woman working, who had her back to me, "does this telescope really work?"
The woman turned to look at me. "Oh, yes, of course," She replied, "we've had it for years now, but it came from the Astronomy department of the university."
I grinned, seeing my vision of stargazing with Calvin come alive before my eyes. "I'll take it," I said brightly.
Across the street, we completed our shopping list and found new sheets that were navy blue and plaid. I thought that they were likely plain enough that Calvin would approve of them, but were still pleasing to the eye. We also stopped by the print shop to pick up the adorable picture of Calvin and I which I had ordered to frame for his room as well.
The girls helped me find the perfect places in Calvin's room for each of our new pieces of decor, and we made his bed nicely for when he returned. When we were finished adding the new bedding, I put a little note on it to tell him what I'd done. I could hardly wait for the surprise, mostly because it would mean that Calvin was back.
Before going to my own room, I glanced over at the telescope, which I had angled out Calvin's window. A vision of him and our future child using it in our own home someday sprung to my mind. It would become a family heirloom. If only he were here to see it now.
Please, come home to me, my Sun.

After spending my entire Saturday shift re-reading The Stars Weap With Us, I boarded the bus to go home. It had been slow for a Saturday, and I had managed to finish the whole novel again during the five hours I was at the shop. I hoped that I was not ruining my favourite book for myself by reading it when I was feeling dismal, but that was what comfort books were for, I supposed. By this point, I nearly had it memorized. Calvin liked it when I recited lines of it to him before bed. I missed it.
As I went to leave the bus, the driver passed me an envelope. A familiar burst of excitement shot through me. Finally, a letter. Calvin was returning in only two days, but I still craved his loving words.
I hurried to my dorm and tore open the letter, not knowing that its contents would change my world for good. The paper fell out onto my bed, and I noticed how short the message was. Calvin must have wanted to save his words for when he came home.
I picked up the letter. It remained in my hands for an hour after I finished reading it. I was frozen. Broken. Unable to comprehend what I had just read.
