I FELT PALE IN THE FACE.

One moment I was enjoying Hwang charm the panties off every women in the vicinity, while Nasrin disgustedly kept her distance, and in the next I was washing my dish down with the non-alcoholic drink held in my hand as she caught my periphery.

The Spritz Gala was overflowing, people in attendance were primarily involved in discourse and buzzing from drinking bubbles, while the board members went around making collections. My concentration, however, shifted when I spotted Audrey conversing with Detective Jameson of all people and heading up the bifurcated staircase.

I couldn't help but feel puzzled about what they were talking about and why he was grinning as she was chatting. Truthfully, I wasn't under the impression they knew each other so well, nor had anything in common, except many of this town's residents knowing of each other due to the size of it alone.

With one hand in his pocket, he held onto the beverage securely, all eyes on her, even while moving towards the steps that led to the next landing.

She wasn't hard to miss at all, anybody would have to be blind to ignore someone so glowing and light, yet fierce and starry.

"Who's the pretty lady?" Lee slapped my back, snapping my attention back to his and Sevda's chatter.

"Nobody important." I immediately answered, looking away. "Isn't it your bedtime? Thought you needed to be in tucked in with all your stuffed animals."

"Don't be sour." Sevda said. "Lee and I are just wondering how this is more important than being on the streets and actively seeking answers. I admit, sitting behind a desk all day is getting boring now. I didn't realise we'd be here mingling and making new friends."

"C'mon." Lee groaned. "I came to Terence with the hopes of being out there on the field. I was really hoping for that."

"You could have passed on the invite." I narrowed my eyes at them both. "Jameson did mention it was to honour the force, the town's achievements and to announce news from the entire Committee. The pair of you could have busied yourself with other things —you still can."

"So that's why you're so perfectly suited and booted?" Sevda couldn't help but sneer at me. "It's not every day you turn up in a navy-blue suit jacket. It's nearly commendable."

"Right, Blaze is allergic to actual colour." Lee hummed. "He likes to dress in black, more black, some grey and on his good days a splash of dark blue."

"Speak another word and I'll spill my wine on your shoes." I threatened.

Lee retreated a few steps at the thought of spoiling the high-cost Italian leather that was wrapped around his feet. He wasn't short of throwing a tantrum. Sometimes I felt like I was babysitting him.
