He knew. I didn't even want to know how, but he knew. I could see it in his eyes. The way he looked at me changed. It was no longer love or passion, it was uncertainty, fear, a bit of hope. My father had been right. It's almost time to bring this mission to a close.

"Babe, you coming?" He called out from downstairs.

"Yeah! Just a second." We were going for lunch at this private club. And of course, I did look stunning. As I walked down the stairs, I realised something. If he did know, then I was in some pretty deep shit.

"You look pretty, as always baby." He took my hand and brought me close. With his arms around my waist, his eyes searched my eyes again for any signs of deception.

"Thank you."

"Shall we?"

"We shall." He led me out of the apartment and into the car.

"So, I was thinking about what you told me last night. About Leo's people coming for you."

"Yeah?"

"We can leave if you want. I just want you to feel safe wherever you are."

"There's no need for that. You're keeping me safe. You have work to do here, so let's stay. Plus, I can take care of myself."

"Yes...I know." He said with a light chuckle. He didn't say anything else to me. We had lunch and a bit of small talk. But I knew that the air had shifted. So when we got back, he went to work in his home office, and I decided to figure out my escape. I went down to a coffee shop across the street to make my call.

"Sophie, this is soon. Two calls in less than a day. What happened?"

"He knows."

"Knows what?"

"Something. I doubt it's everything, but he knows something. He's changed. He's trying not to show it, but I know."

"You need an extraction?"

"Not yet. I just need two more days."

"If you are right about him knowing something, then I can't give you two more days. He's a psychopath."

"Daddy, 48 hours. That's all I need. And I'll check in every hour. Just don't extract me."

"Fine. But every hour!" He ended the call and left me to my thoughts. Just as I stepped out of the coffee shop, I took in the marvelous apartment building. But as I scanned it from top to bottom, my eyes saw him. He was casually standing at the floor to ceiling windows, looking at me from across the street. His arms were folded and he looked...insane. If he was suspecting something before, I might have just given him all he confirmation that he wants.

I walked back into the apartment like nothing happened. He was nowhere in sight. I walked into the room, but he wasn't there either. I went to the bedside drawer and got my gun. I tucked it into the back of my jean trousers and let my sweater cover it.

When I went downstairs, he was seated in the parlour, waiting for me.

"We now answer calls across the street?"

"I wanted to get coffee."

"Ahhh...sit with me." He patted the empty space next to him and I sat down. He sipped his drink as he stared into space.

"Karrion, what's going on?"

"I should be asking you. Is there something you want to say?"

"No. Is there something you want to say?" He smiled and sipped again.

"Actually, there is. My source tells me that you were undercover at The Organisation. Is that true?" There it is.

"Of course not. I dedicated my whole life to that place."

"Mhmmm..." He got up and slowly paced around. I felt something coming, so I got up too. "You've been with me for quite some time now. You know better than to lie to me."

"I'm not lying to you about anything."

"You know, I always wondered why Leo lashed out at you so much when you went back to him. It wasn't about me or Franco. It was because he knew. He found out that you were all a lie. Sophie Kane is just another identity. Your words, your reactions, your temperaments, all of it. All lies."

"You sound insane. I can't..." I made a move to leave but then he pulled out his gun.

"If you take one more step, I'll shoot you." I slowly turned to face him with my hands up.

"Are you insane?! Karrion, I gave up everything to be with you! And now, you're calling me a traitor?!"

"Who do you work for?"

"Nobody! I left all that behind for us..."

"Who do you work for?!"

"Nobody!"

"I'm only going to ask you one more time."

The jig was up. He knew. No point lying anymore. I dropped my hands and walked over to where he had dropped his drink. I gulped it down and then turned to him.

"Well, I guess there's no need lying to you anymore." He was shocked, but his face didn't show it.

"Who the fuck are you?"

"Depends on who's asking. To you, Karrion Black, I'm Sophie Kane. To others, I'm another person."

"You lied to me."

"I'm a spy. It's my job to lie. It was truly nothing personal. To be honest, I did enjoy my time with you."

"I could shoot you right here."

"Go ahead." I took my gun out and held it. "I'm not going to shoot you." And I dismantled it. As the parts fell to the floor, I caught a glimpse of his pain.

"What do you want from me? Why lie for so long?"

"You see, The Organisation likes to think that they call the shots. They don't. We do. You have been on our target for so long. And there was a little turf war between my agency and The Organisation, so...."

"You went undercover at The Organisation, got close to the Boss because you knew that eventually, you'd get assigned to me. That's risky. What if you never got me as a target?"

"I like to not think about it too much. It all worked out, didn't it?"

"Who do you work for?"

"Ever heard of B627? Well, we're know on the streets as Pope."

"Pope doesn't exist."

"Yes it does."

"I don't believe you." I laughed a bit at his words.

"You don't need to. I'd actually prefer if you didn't. We like the idea of people calling us a myth."

"What do you want? Money? To kill me? To arrest me?" This made me laugh again.

"Money?" I couldn't stop laughing. "I sleep with a gold plated face mask. I don't need money!"

"Then what is it?! Why go through so much with me?!"

"Because you were my mission! I don't question my targets. I just get the job done. My job isn't to ask questions, it's to obey orders."

"Is that it?"

"What?"

"Is that all I was? An order?" My resolve softened.

"Karrion, I'm going to leave now."

"You're not going anywhere."

"Fine. You're not going to shoot me or torture me for information. I'm not going to try to kill you or anything. So if you want to stay here, in random denial of what we both know is the truth, that's fine." I sat down and poured more Scotch.

"You are despicable."

"You are in shock, that's all." He stared daggers at me before storming out of the apartment. After he left, I got my things and left too. My mission wasn't yet complete, but I would be back. Soon enough.
