i set my phone down on the kitchen counter and connected it to the charger before walking upstairs. "c'mon mazie." i said as i count each step. counting steps calms me in a way. the little dog followed along behind me and i opened the door to the guest bedroom and flopped on the bed, face smacking the comforter. "ughhhhhh." i groaned and rolled over to lay on my back. "my feet hurt, my back hurts, my stomach hurts, everything hurts." i say as i stare at the ceiling fan as it spins. my eyes follow the blades as they move, quickly looking away because i was getting dizzy. i sit up and look at mazie sniffing the vent and then sneezing.

"bless you." i say blankly. she continues to sneeze. i raise an eyebrow at her wondering what was making her sneeze so much. "what's wrong?" i ask her as i kneel to the ground and lift her head up and look at her nose. white powder surrounded the inside of her nostrils. "what the fuck.." i say and stand up. i take careful steps towards the vent on the floor. i crouch down and look inside, pinching my nose so i dont get what mazie got. i dont see anything so i lift the vent up and peek inside once more. an opened ziploc plastic bag filled with white powder labeled "snow" rests in a corner next to other bags labeled like lace, dragon rock, dynamite, adam, and goodfella. "oh my GOD!" i say as i drop the vent cover and jump back.

i take a deep breath and cautiously make my way over to the vent again. i stare at the bags in complete shock. "holy shit." i say with wide eyes. i pick up the puppy and run downstairs to the kitchen as mazie continues to sneeze. i set her in the sink and grab paper towels, run them underwater and squeeze them so that they are damp. i wrap the now damp paper towel around my pointer finger and start to collect the powder the best i can when my phone rings and nick's name shows up on the screen. i quickly answer before going back to mazie. "heyyy!" i hear nick say. "hi" i say with a bit of panic in my voice.

"are you okay?" nick asks. "yup. but roxy isnt." i say. "what do you mean?" "i caught mazie sniffing the vent and she started to sneeze, a lot, and i checked her nose and she had white powder in her nose." i say and take a deep breath. "what?! was it like, i dont know, drugs or something?" nick asks. "i dont know. but i need to take her to the vet because i dont know if it got into her system." i repond and nick goes silent. "wait, im gonna have to call you back." i say and reach for my phone. "oka-" nick starts but i had hung up on him already. i go to phone keypad and dial in three numbers.

"911, whats your emergency?" the operator says. "hi so um im staying at my friends house but  im home alone with their dog and she started sniffing the vent and-" i got interupted by the operator. "the dog was sniffing the vent?" she asked. "yes. and then she started sneezing a lot and so i checked her nose and she had like white powder in her nose and i think it might be drugs or cocaine or something. i just need help because i cant drive the dog to the vet because i dont have a license and there are fucking drugs in the house." i explain panicked and out of breath. "okay ma'am, what is your name?" "eliana cooper." i respond. "okay eliana, im going to need you to stay on the phone with me okay?" "okay." i say pacing around the kitchen with my hand on my forehead. "what is the address?" the operator asks and my eyes widen. "uh 5046- no! 5640 vulk drive." i say squeezing my eyes shut trying to focus. "alright, eliana. we have officers on their way. could you explain what happened for me?" the female operator questions.

"yeah so um my friend, dixie, is in the hospital and im staying with her family so that i can, you know, see her if anything happens, and um, her parents had a little bit of miscommunication about who was going to stay with dixie for the night, and her step-dad forgot he had to work so he left and dixie's mom had to stay, so i had to come back home and watch their dog overnight and when i got into the bedroom i saw that mazie, or their dog, was sniffing the vents and when she backed away from it she was uncontrollably sneezing, when i checked her nose it had white powder in her nostrils." i say examining the dog who was still struggling.
