The weight of the situation pressed heavily on Angelina's chest, making it hard to breathe. She watched as Amy's small figure darted across the room, her pigtails bouncing with each step, a stark contrast to the dark cloud that loomed over Angelina's mind. The puzzles were a temporary distraction, a way to keep Amy occupied, but they were not a solution to the fear that gripped her heart.
As Amy rummaged through the box, her excitement clearly visible, Angelina's thoughts spiraled back to the letter. The words were etched in her mind, a chilling reminder of the danger that lurked just outside their home.
Angelina's gaze drifted to the window, where the sun shone brightly, illuminating the backyard that Amy loved so much. It was a place filled with laughter, where they had spent countless afternoons playing tag, planting flowers, and enjoying the simple joys of life. Now, it felt like a prison, a reminder of the freedom that had been stripped away since she made a very hard decision that Amy is no longer allowed to leave the house.
"Look, Ms Angelina!" The little girl’s voice broke through her reverie, filled with delight as she held up a colorful puzzle piece. "This one has a butterfly on it! Can we do it together?"
Angelina forced a smile, her heart aching at the innocence of her sister. "Of course, sweetheart. Let’s see how many pieces we can fit together." She joined Amy on the floor, the puzzle spread out between them like a fragile bridge over the chasm of fear that separated them.
As they worked, Amy chattered about what she watched on the television. Angelina listened, nodding and smiling, but her mind was elsewhere. She couldn’t shake the feeling of dread that clung to her like a shadow. What if that boy was coming to get her? What if he was watching them right now?
"Miss Angelina?" Amy's voice was small, pulling her back once more. "Are you okay? You look sad."
Angelina's heart twisted at the concern in the little girl's eyes. "I’m just a little tired, Amy. It’s been a long couple of days."
"We can finish this puzzle and then we can sleep" Amy suggested, her enthusiasm unwavering.
Angelina let out a heavy sigh and stared at the puzzles, her mind racing with uncertainty.
What on earth is she going to do now?
