Prologue

The sunbeams of the evening sun warming up the environment, the lukewarm breeze rustling the leafs of the trees surrounding a small lake. The water of the lake had a bright orange glimmer due to the sinking sun and the trees threw long shadows on the ground of the forest.

Sitting on the warmed up rocks at the shore of the lake, enjoying the last days of summer, was a child, probably around 12 or 23 years old, playing the flute. The melody was slow and peaceful, yet not very confident played. The child most likely wasn't all too familiar with the song they were playing but they surely gave their best.

They were all alone, making music in lonliness. Or so they thought. Without their awareness, a boy approached the child, seemingly mesmerized by their melody. He came closer from the shadows of the trees, his short white hair slightly moving in the soft breeze.

The other child flinched, stopping to play the flute as soon as they noticed the boy when he sat down. They whipped their head to the side, meeting the heterochromic eyes of the other child. He just smiled, his green and blue eyes sparkling.

"Your tune... it was really good. Where did you learn to play?", he asked with an excited, childish voice. The child was a bit taken back. The never were being approached like that by other children. To be frank they never been approached by other children at all.

They never have been an outgoing child, keeping to themself, rather staying inside the house, playing their flute, pursue other creative activities or study for school. They rarely went outside and even then, they never tried to interact with others their age or anyone at all.

They were afraid of being judged, disliked or excluded. And this behaviour kept children away, giving them the reputation of being arrogant, thinking too high of themselves when in reality, they were just someone who kept to themselves to prevent themselves of being hurt by others.

This boy, however, didn't seem to even hesitate to approach the flute being child. He sat down beside them and started to speak to them almost like they knew each other. The child answered the boy's question with a low, quiet voice like she didn't speak for long amount of time.

"Thank you. I have a teacher who teaches me how to play." The boy grinned, showing his pearly white teeth. "That's awesome! May I know who you are?", he asked, looking directly into their eyes. The child was starteled. Was the boy trying be their friend? Or was he just polite? Was this a joke?

However, the boy seemed genuine, patiently waiting for an answer. "I'm (Y/N)...(Y/N) (L/N)."

The boy's eyes lit up. "(Y/N)...(Y/N)...", he repeated the name. "That's a beautiful name. I'm Nikolai. Nikolai Gogol. Nice to meet you, (Y/N). I hope we can get great friends!", he introduced himself, holding out a hand for the other child to shake.

(Y/N) slowly took his hand, giving him a light handshake. "Yeah... I hope so as well...", they hesitantly said. Even though it seemed that the boy was genuine and honest, they couldn't help but wonder if this was really the start of a friendship. Their first friendship. Or if this is just going to be a short aquaintance that will fall apart rather soon.

But for now, (Y/N) decided to shove these thoughts aside and get to know this boy, Nikolai, a bit better.

"Do you... play any instrument?" Nikolai shook his head. "No, not yet. But I'm playing with the idea of learning how to play the violin."

"That sounds like a great idea in my opinion. Learning an instrument is a great way to be creative."

The boy snickered while looking into their eyes. "You sound like an adult, little songbird."

I narrowed my eyes at his nickname, confused. "Songbird?"

Nikolai grinned, seemingly proud of the nickname he gave them. "Yes, songbird. Because you are like a little songbird, playing your flute. And your hair slightly remind me of feathers."

(Y/N) didn't know why, but they began to smile. "My hair reminds you of feathers? Why?", tey asked, slightly amused. The boy nodded. "Because it looks messy, yet soft. Just like the feathers of a little baby bird."

(Y/N) chuckled in their hand, laying their flute in their lap. "I don't think I can argue with that, Niko." The boy tilted his head to the side, his grin widened. "Niko? You're cute, little singbird~"

A light blush spread over (Y/N)'s cheeks and nose, causing them to look away.

"You... you think so?", they whispered, slightly embarrassed by how easily his word made them blush. However they felt comfortable around this boy. They didn't know what it was, but they felt a warm feeling spreading in their stomach, slowly wandering to their chest.

"Awww, is the little songbird flustered~? Is the little songbird blushing~?", Nikolai giggled teasingly, slightly poking their cheek. "N-no, I'm not...", they stuttered a bit. They couldn't help but smile, however.

Something about this boy was drawing them to him. Maybe it's because he's the first one their age, they ever had a real conversation with. Maybe they were just misinterpreting their own thoughts and feelings, which sounds, to be frank, quiet silly to happen.

Nikolai snickered. "Yes, you are~ Yes, you are~", he teased, wrapping one of his arms around their neck while he lifted the other above their head, ruffling their hair in a mocking manner.

"Hey, stop~ You're ruining my hair", they giggled, trying to escape his grasp, lightly shoving him away.

He chuckled teasingly. "As if there was anything to ruin in the first place, little songbird."

"EY!", they fake pout, frowning in a joking manner. "That was mean, Niko!"

They didn't know why they acted this way, considering it was a quiet unusual behaviour for them. Maybe it was just the fact this was the first time they had the chance to act this way with someone at all.

"Oh little songbird, you have no idea how mean I can be~", he cooed in their ear, nuzzling his cheek against theirs.

"You're impossible, Niko~" They rolled their eyes, while he snickered.

"I have the feeling this is going to be a really great friendship, little songbird~"
