You're not sure how long you two stood there, you sobbing into Sawyer's shoulder and him holding you close and rubbing your back with his chin resting on your shoulder. You don't want the moment to end, but eventually his rubbing ceases. "Are you okay?" he murmurs.
You stand back and nod. "Yeah, I guess so," you answer.
His worried face travels to your bloody hands and knees. "No, you're not. C'mon, let's go back to my house and get you fixed up."
You smile weakly and follow Sawyer out of town and to the car. He holds your door open like a gentleman, then starts to drive back to his house. You glance over, and you see Sawyer's face knitted in concern. "I'm so sorry... I tried to reach you, I really tried, but they wouldn't let me go..." he says, only half to you.
He sighs. "Sometimes I wish that I didn't win The Voice. It's been great, but it's hurting the people I care about most." You blink back more tears. This is the moment you've been waiting for for years, but it just doesn't seem right to tell him now. The rest of the drive passes in silence, but the entire time, you wonder if you'll ever work up the courage to admit that you're in love with your best friend.
