Emilia and John B slowly lift their hands in the air, he cuffs them both and shoves them in the car.

"You two are coming with me down to the station." He says.

"I really feel for you two kids, I really do." Peterkin says, frowning at them.

They were in the Sheriff's department, sat beside one another with Peterkin across from them.

"I know since they never found your dad, a part of you thinks he might walk through that door someday." She says, standing from her seat.

"I don't blame you." Peterkin sighs, rubbing her forehead. "But going on fandangos? That ain't gonna bring him back."

Melia shakes her head. "He's coming back. I know he is." She mumbles.

"He's been missing at sea for nine months." She states, looking down at the two sympathetically. She sits back down. "Your father's dead."

"No he's not." Melia say shakily, looking over at her brother who looks like he's on the brink of tears.

"You don't know that." John says to the sheriff, shaking his head.

"Yeah, I do." She nods at him. "And as hard as it is, you two need to accept it and move on."

Melia laughs emptily, shaking her head. Do they not fucking realise they have tried and tried to move on? It doesn't fucking work like that.

"You've been running around, getting caught up in things that do not involve you." She states, furrowing her eyebrows at the pair.

"And now your in a heap of trouble."

Melia's leg was bouncing, she didn't know what to say or do. She was tired of this. She wanted things to go back the way they were a few years back, before Rafe, before Sarah, before her dad went missing.

"It's not just foster care we're talking about." Peterkin says, crouching down beside Emilia. "You assaulted a man."

"By accident." She mumbles, scrunching up her face.

"You'd do battery, JD time. While your brother got shipped off to some rando's home." She says, trying to get it through to her the severity of her actions.

She gets up, moving back to her desk.

"I can still help you two out, but we gotta do a little tit for tat." She says, looking between them with a serious look on her face. "And this time, you gotta tat a whole lot better."

There was a pause, Melia turned and looked out the window, biting her nails.

"I know you two have gotten hold of a compass."

John B shakes his head, biting the inside of his lip. "I don't know what you're talkin' about."

"I know you took it off the wreck." She says, furrowing her eyebrows at them.

"There ain't much that happens in the OBX that I don't hear about eventually."

Melia shakes her head and scoffs. "Okay, what do you want with this- this compass?" She asks.
