A/N put on the sad playlists guys it's angst time but simplified (also sorry it's shorter)

Cross and Nightmare turned to Dawn in confusion. In this world, magic could determine how good of a job people would hire you for. There was a lot of magicism against super weak humans and monsters, and even if more powerful monsters were feared it just meant people wouldn't cross them.

"Why wouldn't you want to be stronger? I for one pride myself on being one of the strongest in our school, if not the strongest."

Nightmare casually boasted; was he even trying to? Nobody could tell, not even him. It was just the truth that had been ingrained into everyone's heads for so long.

Cross supposed he understood. His power was a real asset, but it came at a cost. The same thing was true for Nightmare, except he had significantly less repercussions.

"I guess I get it, since a lot of my power is due to my forced experimentation. Is there something similar for you?"

Dawn looked away and sighed. Maybe it was time to tell someone else the situation. These two would be heading in harms way, and they needed to know the risk.

"Okay, I'll tell you the story. Just don't interrupt or interfere."

The two boys nodded and Nightmare sat down on the couch next to Cross, as Dawn sat down across from them.

"My origin is complicated. Before I was born, there was a group of very powerful monsters. Each represented a fundamental aspect of the world. Memory and Regret; they are exactly as their names suggest. They have the ability to influence or bring to mind a persons memories or regrets. That episode I had was a warning from one of them. A warning that Doodle would be back."

Cross couldn't help but feel nervous at that. He had a lot of regrets and unpleasant memories. If he ever came across one of them he'd have to go out of his way to be the most polite person they'd ever met.

"There was also Time- she was the more responsible and reserved one. She never used her powers over time unless it was very important, thus she had immense prowess in combat without magic. Doodle was there, but back then he went by the name Sphere."

Nightmare looked on in confusion. Both weren't really good or menacing names.

"He had a twin sister; Doodle. He took on her name after she was killed in a training accident."

Oh. Well. That was almost a bit obsessive wasn't it? Cross shared an uneasy glance with Nightmare.

"The most important one here is Balance. Their job was to be both the good and the bad in this world, to make sure it equaled out. But because their jobs were so opposite, they were a bit unstable."

Dawn looked especially uncomfortable when talking about this person. Cross couldn't help but wonder if this person was more than a faint memory.

"While they were all training Balance lost their cool, and their control. In a power fit, they created a force so strong it could have killed everyone. Doodle, being ever the kind person, jumped in the way to save everyone."

Cross nodded. So Sphere must've taken on the name in honor of her sacrifice.

"In... in his anger, Sphere killed Balance. But there always has to be some form of Balance in the world so.. a fragment of their soul merged with one of the new spirits being formed to protect the balance of the world. By chance or fate, that young soul was me."

It was shocking yes, but it also made sense. The soul that followed her around never seemed to resent her, nor her it. So any idea of a situation where someone experimented on them wouldn't have made sense anyway.
