JIMIN POV

"Dalsu, it's time to go." I
called him for the fourth time.

He was usually pretty good
about getting up in the
morning but he was mad
at me and this was my
punishment.

I hobbled to his door, my
stupid broken foot throbbing.

"Come on, buddy."

"We have to get you to school
or you'll miss your trip."

A grunt and a closet door shut
a little too loudly later and he was opening the door fully dressed.

I thought this shit didn't
happen until they hit the teen years but I was going to
cut him some slack.

This was the first field trip
since ever that I wasn't going
to be with him for and if it
was because of my fall at work and resulting fracture, he'd probably be cool with it.

But the underlying issue was
my new position, one that required me to work crazy schedules and miss things
like this.

"I don't feel right, Daddy."

"Can I stay home?"

He did the little whine and
wide-open eyes that he knew usually turned me into putty.

And really?

If I could cave and keep him home, I'd do it in a heartbeat.

They were going to go on a nature walk to "investigate"
moss or some shit.

It wasn't like he'd miss
out too much.

The reality was, I was on
thin ice at work.

Allen was pissed as hell that
I filed for workman's comp to
pay my medical bills after slipping on the grease that leaked out of the ancient fryer.

It wasn't as if I even took
time off work, I just needed those medical bills paid.

He'd already moved me to
day shift and now he needed
me to come in for a meeting, which my gut said was code
for being fired.

I did not have time for a
temper fit.

Except I was the only one
who could give him the time.

I was the only person he had.

The rest of it would have to
wait.

"Morning." I hugged him,
trying to duck down to his
height and almost toppling
over, thanks to my boot.

"Sorry I can't come today."

"I really wanted to."

"I know Dad."

Not Daddy but Dad.

Ugg.

"It's not fun on trips without
you."

"The other kids—" He hugged
me back not completing the sentence, not needing to.
