JUNGKOOK POV

Joon didn't call meetings for
no reason so when the pack leaders, betas and guards,
along with any available
support staff were called, I
knew something was up.

We gathered in the alpha's kitchen since his office was
too small for all of us.

"Thank you all for coming
today." he bellowed and everyone shut up.

They had been guessing and trying to come up with a
reason for such a meeting.

We all bared our necks to the new alpha but I wasn't the only one who noticed the alpha's omega was missing.

He was usually here for meetings.

"We've been notified by the
local police that a child, a
human child, is missing and
was last seen looking at moss
on the edge of pack land
while on a school trip."

"Of course, I offered our
help in finding this child."

Nods and grunts of agreement came from everyone under
the alpha's roof.

"That means no wolf forms?"

I asked and said at the same time, needing the alpha's confirmation.

"That's exactly right."

"No shifting."

"We have to use two legs for
this one since there are law enforcement personnel and
other humans already
searching our lands."

"Bring a backpack with
essentials just in case the
child is hungry or dehydrated
or hurt."

"On your best behavior though
I know that goes without saying."

Pride swelled in my chest.

Our alpha had such trust in us.

Too bad that trust would be wobbly once the other pack merged with us and on the
night of the omega
ceremony, of all things.

"Remember, no shifting if possible."

"If you must, keep shifted
until you get back here."

"That way there's no fucking YouTube videos of us
shifting, you feel me?"

More grunting.

None of us wanted to be
exposed to the humans.

The cost was too high.

"Alpha, where is the alpha's omega? Is he well?" someone asked.

We relied on the mated pair to ground us, human and beast.

Joon shook his head.

"He is well physically but emotionally, you can
understand that this puts my mate in a freak out, of sorts."

"A missing child is jarring for
a new father and hits close
to home in terms of fear."

"But he's already helping."

"Now, go and be safe."

"Jungkook, you are in charge should anything happen or the humans have concerns that
need to be addressed."

"Also for the record, I will be searching too but staying close
in case anything else comes
up or I am needed here."

No one said anything, so we
filed out and went into the
woods after grabbing back
packs.

It would be strange to search
for something on two legs
but it had to be done.

I allowed my wolf to some
what take over while I walked, leading me this way and that with his enhanced senses.

In minutes, I was onto something and followed the
trail of scent and rustling.

I heard and scented humans
in my range but this smell
was something else.

Something kin—something familiar.

I waited for the nearby humans to walk away, listening to their talk about the tragedy of a missing child while they
walked and scanned the
area with their flashlights.

We needed no such help.

Our shifter vision showed us everything, even in darkness.

"What is that?" I asked as I approached a moving object
on the ground and then gasped as I figured out what it was.

I knelt beside it and emanated my power, calming and settling
it at once as it bared its teeth and tried to defend itself in
the only way it knew how.

I pulled a blanket from my
pack and wrapped up the
tiny thing in a bundle before
sprinting toward the pack
lands and the alpha house
as fast as my human legs
would take me.

I ran inside and barely caught my breath before Joon
appeared at the foot of the stairs.

"Jungkook, what is it? Did
you find the child?"

I shook my head and unveiled what was in my blanket.

"Jungkook, is that..." he trailed off as shocked as I was.

"It's a shifter baby."

"A cub."

"This is no human child."
