JUNGKOOK POV

"What made him shift?"

"Jungkook, I can't talk to you
like this." Jimin's voice filtered through the haze of rage
my wolf and I shared.

"And I'm scared."

Trenton was also talking but
I wasn't really taking in
whatever he was saying.

It was my mate calling for me that gave me the strength to fight my way back to my
human form.

We didn't want him scared.

Was he scared of us?

No, he had seen me in this
form before.

He was scared because of everything happening and
while the wolf wanted to take over, to protect him and keep him safe, it took the two-
legged body with the ability
to communicate in words to
give our mate what he needed right now.

The wolf disagreed.

He wanted to stay in four-
legged form and help in
any way a wolf could help.

He growled and snarled, which wasn't helping in the slightest.

My mate's eyes were wide.

We can't keep this up.

He's only getting more frightened.

No.

He has to know I'm here for
him.

That I want to fix this.

He's ours.

Mine.

Mate.

But he doesn't know how to
talk to you and that's making
it worse.

You can come back later,
maybe curl around him and
keep him warm.

I knew I'd hit the right note when he stopped fighting me
but I couldn't take long or my wolf might change his mind.

We both loved our mate, both wanted to take care of him.

And we both knew his life
was in danger.

So I shifted and held tight.

Sending a constant flow of reassurance to the wolf that we were still doing this together.

He wasn't shut out of the communication—he just had
to help me do it in a way our beloved mate could
understand.

I'd never even heard of some
one trying to change a human
to shifter in modern times.

It was not only forbidden
but if she'd been caught, ari would have been put to death.

There were good reasons for
the ruling.

It rarely worked properly
and almost always had
unwelcome side effects.

It was usually a cruel failure.

"So, someone, most likely
your late wife..."

Trenton didn't even give her
the title of mate.

He was vibrating with anger
as well.

He held his stillness a
moment before continuing.

"Your late wife at some point decided she wanted a shifter mate, so she used an archaic method to try to make you
one."

"What?" His voice held all
the horror my own would.

"But I thought she loved me."

"Why would she..."
