Numb.

That was all that I was feeling after I had finished telling the four people that were in the room with me, silently praying that three of the four people in the room would be able to help me get my sister here, safe and alive.

"Ok," one of the men, Officer Kendrick, said, tapping the arm rests of the chair he was sitting in before he stood. "Let me go ahead and call some people. Do you want her to be transported here?" He looked at my girlfriend and raised an eyebrow in question while he looked at her.

"If she is able to be transported here, then yes," she said and nodded in confirmation while she grabbed my hand and squeezed my hand reassuringly. "If not, then I can pick her up at the police station or wherever you need me to pick her up at." She looked at her lawyer when she said that.

"Or it can be at my office," Mr. Dawson said, also standing. "Let me also call people and then get some paperwork started." He looked at me and bit back a small smile while he tucked his head closer to his chest. "If that is ok with you, of course."

I didn't say a word and slowly blinked, confused. I had no idea why he was looking at me like that and hoped that it wasn't anything bad.

"He wants to know if you want to have a protective order or something like that against your mom," Bailey said, her voice barely above a whisper while she leaned closer to me, and I looked at her with wide eyes. "He also wants to know if you want him to represent you and your sister in court."

"Can he do that?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "What about all of the legality bs that we will have to worry about?"

"Well, he isn't your family friend," she said and shrugged, biting back a small grimace while she pressed her lips into a thin line. "He isn't going to be blinded by any feelings or whatever it is like that. It's why he still handles stuff that deals with me, even though I consider him to be a family friend."

I hesitated and slowly nodded before I looked at him. "Please," I said, trusting my girlfriend and what she had to say because I had no idea what anything meant and didn't care.

All I wanted to do was take a nap...

They looked at each other and then back at me.

"If you will excuse me, I am going to go ahead and put Blake to bed. After that, we can discuss everything and then go from there," Bailey said and stood, pulling me into a standing position.

The three men looked at each other and then looked at her with equal looks on their faces that I didn't understand.

"And who says anything about you being in this, Bailey?" her uncle asked and raised an eyebrow in question while the other two men nodded in confirmation.

Bailey scowled and narrowed her eyes while she stared at them. "Because I have been dealing with a lot of stuff that deals with the kids, and she is going to be one of them." She gestured toward the basement.

"I think it would be best if they were put in my care," Coach Dalton said with a shake of his head. He raised his hand to silence her, and she closed her mouth and pursed her lips in annoyance. "You have four kids and yourself to worry about, Bay. You do not need the added stress."

"If it is to make sure that they are safe, then I will take it," Bailey said coldly with a shake of her head. "I am not going to hurt myself if that is what you are worried about, and I am not going to turn to drugs or whatever it is that you are afraid I will go through. I already know what that does to a person's psyche, and I am not going to put the kids through that again."

"It's not just that, Bay," Coach Dalton said and shook his head while the other two men nodded in agreement. "There is more stuff that is going to happen and will have to happen, especially since I am sure that both parents are going to be fighting tooth and nail to make sure that their kids stay where they need to be, which is under their care and at their house no matter what you have to say or do."

Bay shrugged and pressed her lips into a thin line, looking nonchalant. "And this has you worried because... why?" She raised an eyebrow in question and looked at them unamused.

"You could get hurt, or worse killed, and I believe that you are needed more by Mr. Peterson's side than sitting with us while we talk about everything that needs to get done," Mr. Dawson said and gestured toward me. He tucked his head closer to his chest and looked at her with both eyebrows raised, silently telling her something.

Bay sighed and shook her head, rubbing the bridge of her nose while she pursed her lips in annoyance but relented as if she knew what he meant, even though I did not. "I hope you know that I don't like this at all, Mr. Dawson," she grumbled while she scowled and narrowed her eyes.

"I know," he said and nodded, biting back a small smirk. He cleared his throat and grew serious while he nodded toward the stairs. "Now, go ahead and put him either to bed or do something else. We will call people and work everything out outside."

Bailey scowled and rolled her eyes, pressing her lips into a thin line. "You all can do what you need to do in here," she said coldly. "Or you can do it in the study. There is no need for you three to go outside and talk there. I will stay away from you all while you talk and sort everything out."

"It's for the best if we did it outside so that if we need to leave, then we can leave and get everything done," Officer Kendrick said and the other two men nodded in confirmation. "I also need to call the Mrs. and tell her that I will be late for dinner."

"Tell her that I am going to cook one day if she and the rest of your bunch wants to come over," Bay said. She grabbed my hand with hers and squeezed it reassuringly, but I did nothing but stayed there, not participating in anything else that they were talking about. "I will make a potluck or roast or something like that."

"I'll let her know," Officer Kendrick said and nodded in confirmation. "Excuse us, and we will take our leave so that we can get everything done."

And with that and without another word to any of us, the three men left while I stared blankly ahead, praying that they would be able to help my sister escape my mom before something bad happened to her.

Because I had no idea what I would do if we were too late in the end...
