Malcolm and I never spoke about my breakdown again. But instead of our former agreement to "never talk to me", we talked every day.
We worked on our project at his house every night, we bickered all the time, I became close friends with Dewey, Reese and I still hated each other, and I met his parents. They loved me, and told me I could come over whenever I wanted.
Malcolm and I ended up being best friends in only six weeks.
One morning, we both got to school early. "Hey, Mal," I said when we walked into the front parking lot.
"What?" He asked.
I shoved his shoulder and grinned.
"You're it!" I yelled, taking off running.
"What the hell?!" Malcolm yelled, running after me.
I ran into the school, through some of the hallways, and into the advanced classroom before he knocked me flat on my back and pinned my arms to the floor.
I stopped laughing and looked up at Malcolm.
He was panting, sweaty, and smiling.
I felt..... stuff in my stomach as I looked at him.
We cleared our throats as the first bell rang.
"Ready for another long day as a smart ass?" I asked.
"Of course," Malcolm muttered, sitting next to me.
I sat there as the other kid and our teacher filed in the room.
I finally realized what the stuff in my stomach was.
The stuff?
Butterflies.
