Chapter 28
Zephyr
We rush towards the hospital doors with Ethan clutching Sarah in his arms, and struggling to walk at the same time. As soon as we make it into the lobby of the sterile and quiet hospital, the sound of Sarah's loud heaves and moans snaps everyone's attention to our predicament.
Two shell shocked teenagers, with one struggling to hold onto a heavy and heavily tattooed teenager. We must be a sight to see.
The attendant at the desk stops typing on her little computer to gape at us, her fingers freezing in mid air.
"She's having a baby! We need someone right now!" I yell in the silence.
The attendant snaps back into action by frantically dialing someone on the hospital phone. You can hear the panic in her voice as she spews on about how some girl is about to give birth in the lobby. You'd think someone who probably deals with emergencies on a daily basis would be better mentally equipped than that. But it more seems like she's about to have a mental breakdown.
Barely a minute passes before we see emergency clientele, four nurses, emerge from a nearby elevator with a stretcher in tow. They rush over to us and quickly help lay Sarah down in the stretcher.
Ethan almost doubles over with relief from the weight being lifted off his shoulders. Literally.
"It's coming!" Sarah grimaces sweat beads trickling down her ghostly pale face. She kicks out and ends up accidentally kicking one of the male nurses in the groin. He falls to his knees clutching his precious privates in his hands.
"Sarah calm down. You just kicked that nurse in his groin!"
"Now he knows how I feel!" She shrieks. "Oh god. I can feel the baby coming!"
Ethan helps the nurse to his feet while I soothe her, my hand stroking her damp red hair. "It's gonna be okay Sarah."
Over my shoulder I see a couple of people who were seated in the lobby, that despite their various ailments, took time to get out their phones and record our situation, clearly finding something comedic in this.
"We'll take good care of her." One of the emergency people assures me as they start wheeling her away. The male nurse has apparently recovered although he clearly holds a grudge against Sarah by the way he's glaring at her with pure scorn.
"Wait!" Sarah shrieks clamping down on my arm. "You're coming with me."
I shake my head rigidly trying to pry my hand away from Sarah, but she's as strong as a bull.
"I can't." I whimper. All this chaos and confusion. Doctors and nurses. Blood. Babies. Birth. Huge vaginas. I just can't deal.
"Please Zephyr. I need you. I don't want to go through this alone." Sarah pleads her brown eyes boring into mine. She looks so desperate and lost. I've never seen her look so vulnerable. I can't say no. She needs someone.
