Chapter 11
Zephyr
On my last day of school before I get shipped away, is when I finally tell my friends that I'm leaving.
"What?" Imani questions. "Why? Do your parents not know that it's your senior year?"
"And your basically Homecoming queen?" Allison interjects.
I sigh. "Yes they know. It's just that the school is really good." Yes that was my lie. I had told them that I had been accepted into a prestigious private school in California, instead of telling them that I'm pregnant, and was going to a school for knocked up teenagers.
"What am I going to do without you?" Allison asks depressingly, while twirling her spaghetti forlornly on her fork. I look at her with sadness. Allison has never been good at making friends. The only reason she's popular is because of Imani and I. And Imani and Allison aren't really close friends. The only reason they hang out with each other is because of me. So without me here, I seriously doubt Imani will continue to hangout with her. So where will that leave her?
I take her hands in mine and squeeze. "You'll manage. I promise. " She looks back at me doubt clouding her eyes.
"When are you leaving?" Imani asks.
"Sunday."
"Sunday!" They both yell in unison.
I sigh loudly. "Yes Sunday."
"That's only two days away. That hardly gives us any time together at all." Imani whines, as she pouts her lips.
"Now I'm really depressed." Allison states as she throws away her food.
Just then Zack and his posse walk by. While they go I hear snatches of their conversation.
"I shagged her multiple times it was so easy. She basically begged me too." Zack declares proudly.
"Yeah?" One of his little minions say eagerly. Obviously lapping up the information like a dog to his water bowl.
"Hell yeah." He states back. "She even asked me if I wanted to bring her sister in on the little act too." As they laugh my anger boils. Before I can even stop myself I march up to him and jab him in the chest.
He staggers in surprise. Before I can give him time to process what's happening, I take him by surprise and shove him again. This time he falls. "You are a stupid asshole, who has nothing better to do but spread filthy lies about people! And your stupid friends, and the idiots in this cafeteria who believe your stupid lies are complete and utter fools!" By the time I finish my little rant, he's already gotten back up. I deliver him a kick in the groin and send him sprawling back down again. He lets out an ear piercing shriek and holds his crotch.
Of course by this time I've gotten the attention of the whole cafeteria, and his friends are looking at me like I'm a crazy woman, but I don't give a damn. I'm on a roll.
"I'm sick and tired of your shit!" I yell. I then pick up a tray and throw it at his head. Strawberry milk, and corn juice dribble down his face as he stares up at me in shock.
"You stupid bitch." He sputters as he wipes mashed potatoes from his face.
Allison joins me flanked by Imani. Both have two trays in their hands. "This is for Nirvana!" They yell as they throw their trays at him. We jump back as milk and other contents splatter.
Then it's quiet. Zack along with the whole cafeteria is stunned into a shocked silence. Then Ivonne, a fat girl in the tenth grade, breaks the silence, as she runs up with two trays. "This is for calling me a fat ass and for Nirvana!" She yells as she throws them at Zack.
Then another nerdy freshman boy comes up with a tray. "This is for tripping me in the hallway, and for Nirvana!" He yells and throws his tray at Zack too.
Then the whole cafeteria becomes a flurry of chaotic mess. Hundreds of kids run up to throw their trays at Zack and soon their throwing them at each other. The whole place is in complete and utter chaos. "This is for Nirvana!" Rings loudly from the lips of every student. I know they're using my little rant, as an excuse to have a food fight. But I don't care. As long as they know Zack is a liar, and not as nice as he makes himself to be. A milk carton flies over my head and I duck.
Zack takes this oppurtunity to try and slink away, but he slips in some milk. I grab another tray and smash it onto his head, and lean down so we're face to face. "Next time. Never mess with the Jones twins, because there will be hell to pay." I declare ominously. I then get up and link arms with Imani and Allison and we walk out the cafeteria, leaving the mayhem behind us.
We get out the cafeteria, but we keep on going till we're out the school doors. When the sunshine hits my face. I laugh. I laugh because I know I won't get in that much trouble because it was my last day, and I laugh because Zack looked pretty hilarious with mashed potatoes in his eyes. But I also laugh because I'm free. I'm free of the guilt for not sticking up for Nirvana the first time, I'm free of the rumors about her, I'm free of that godforsaken school that I though I loved, but realize that I don't like at all, I'm free of pretending to be someone I'm not, and always having to appear perfect in front of my peers. I laugh and then I cry.
I cry because I'm free.
