Jake Johnson was raised by his single mother (who was a stained-glass window maker).
He wen toNew Trier High School in Winnetka and went to college at the University of Iowa. Whilest in Iowa, he wrote a play, which got him admission to NYU's Tish School of the Arts, in 2002 he got the John Golden Playwriting Prize and the Sloan Fellowship for Screenwriting. The Ensemble Studio Theater, produced his play Cousins. While in New York he started The Midwesterners a sketch comedy troupe. When he moved to LA he worked as a waiter and production assistant while gaining TV roles.
Now, he lives in Los Angeles with his wife. And, he's a member the Sunday Men's Basketball League and the Interstate 5 Tennis Association.
