Three.

Days go by and I get a text.

James: Hey! How are you?

My face instantly brightens up. I forgot we'd exchanged numbers.

Me: Great! You?

James: Same here. Are you free Friday night?

Me: Yes, why?

James: Would you like to go to dinner with me?

Me: Are you asking me out on a date?

James: Yes.

Me: Well I'd love to.

James: Great. Pick you up at 7. You're the red house, right?

Me: Yep, that's the one.

James: See you then!

I shut my phone off and flopped on my bed. I couldn't seem to stop smiling.

I was in such a daze that I didn't even hear my mom come in my room.

"Honey? What are you doing?"

I instantly sit up, and try to make it the least obvious that I'm ecstatic.

"Um, nothing. Why?"

"You seem a bit giddy. Did something happen?"

"No, why?" I really don't want her getting involved, but she always finds her way to meddle in.

"What's his name?" She says with a smirk on her face.

"Mom!"

"I would like to know who is making my daughter smile like she did when she was a little girl around Christmas time."

"It's James. James Carson."

Her smile instantly turned into a frown.

"Oh no, honey."

"What? What is it?"

"You can't date him."

"Why not?" I was confused and getting angry. She couldn't tell me who I could and couldn't see. She didn't even know him. Not that I knew much about him either, but still.

"Because I said so."

"Mom! You can't do that! It's just dinner!"

"Oh yes I can. Trust me. He's trouble."

"How would you even know?"

"Just trust me, please. I love you."

And with that, she left my room. I was dumbfounded.

I didn't know what to do. In the moment, I was so furious with her that I decided to not only go, but text James as well.

Me: Hey, are you actually free tonight instead?

James: Yeah, how come?

Me: Let's reschedule.

James: Sounds good! See you at 7.

I was pleased with myself. I never did anything wrong, so I deserved a little fun, and my mom wouldn't be one to ruin that.
