Chapter 8

Maya POV

Tonight was New Years and tomorrow is the day that Lucas leaves to go back to Texas. We had spent pretty much every day he was here together due to the fact that I had to watch McKenzie. The only day I had off was Christmas day which I was glad because I wanted Lucas to have some bonding time with his Mom and sister. Truth is I was starting to want to distance myself because I was dreading the fact that he had to leave first thing in the morning. I told him I would go with him to the airport tomorrow but the truth of the matter is I don't know how I was going to be when he left. My mom said she would go with me so I didn't have to be alone. I promised him that we could spend the last night together. His mom got off work at 10:00 tonight so he and I had planned to ring in the new year on the rooftop of my apartment building.  

After his mom got home we went over to my place. My mom was all dressed as she was ready to leave with her new boyfriend Shawn. I really liked Shawn a lot. It turned he and Mr. Matthews were best friends growing up. I guess Topanga set my mom up with him.  My mom was actually excited to meet Lucas. We arrived my place at about 10:30 and my mom was just getting ready to leave. 

"You look beautiful Mom." 

"Thank you, baby girl." she replied before giving me a hug. 

"Mom, this is my boyfriend Lucas."  I said introducing the two. 

"Nice to meet you Ms. Hart." he replied before putting his hand out. 

"Please, call me Katy!" she said "It's so nice to finally meet you, Maya has told me so much about you." 

"Nice to meet you as well." Lucas said with a smile. 

"I've never seen my daughter this happy. You must be something special to her."  

"She's very special to me too. Thank you for coming along with us to the airport tomorrow." he replied. 

"I wouldn't have it any other way. " she said with a smile. "You two enjoy yourselves tonight." 

"We will, Mom." I replied.  

"Thank you, we will." Lucas replied. 

"What time is Shawn supposed to be here?" I asked Mom. 

"He should be here any moment. I'm just waiting on him to text me." she answered. 

"I really like Shawn. He is perfect for you." I said with a smile. 

"I like him too. I guess Topanga knew what she was doing when she set us up." she replied. 

"Topanga knows everything. What doesn't she know?" I turned to look at Lucas "Topanga is Riley's mom. She's a lawyer." 

"She sounds like an amazing person." he replied. 

"Katy, I just want you to know that I commend you for the wonderful job you have done as raising Maya as a single job. She is fantastic with McKenzie and I think she gets a lot of that maternal instinct from you." Lucas said and I smiled at him.

"Thank you Lucas, that's very sweet." she replied. 

"You're welcome." he answered. "I really mean what I said."
