Chapter 24

Maya POV

As soon as I heard that voice telling Nate to let me go I felt relief but also some confusion as to why Lucas was here. It scared me when I saw him put his fist in the air getting ready to punch Nate in the face. While I appreciated the fact that Lucas wanted to kick his ass I didn't want him to get in trouble again just after getting off probation and be sent away. After Nate stepped away from me I ran over to Lucas and couldn't stop the tears from coming down my face. Nate always made comments to me never did anything like that. Seconds later I heard Riley, and remembered she was meeting me at my locker so we could go to lunch. I was so glad when Lucas spoke up and told her we would get with her later. After she left it was only Lucas and I in the hallway. I wiped my face and looked at up. He had a look of sadness on his face. 

 He took the hair out of my face and wiped my tears away. "Are you okay Maya?" 

"Yes, Lucas I'm fine." I nodded. "What are you doing here?" 

"I had to come back to sign papers so that I'm able to start school tomorrow." he replied. "I came to see you because I figured you'd be at lunch."  

"Well I'm so glad you are here." I said hugging him tightly. 

"Me too, but Maya I'm so sorry I haven't been able to be here to protect you. How long has this been going on?" he asked. 

"This was the first time he ever did anything like that to me. Usually he'd just hit on me and that's it. And Lucas while I love the fact that you wanted to kick the shit out of him please never do that again. I just got you back. I can't lose you again." I replied and the tears started flowing.

"I know, that's why I stopped when you said something. I'm sorry I wasn't thinking,  I was just getting angry that he wasn't stepping away from you." he replied "You looked so scared. It won't happen again if I have anything to say about it because I'll be with you now." 

I bit my lip nervously "I don't know if I want to stay here Lucas." what if something happens again?" 

"Well I want to report his ass to the office but first maybe we should call your Mom and tell her what happened." he replied and I looked at him confused. 

"Why do you want to call Mom?" I asked him. 

"Because if you don't want to be here they are going to need her permission for you to leave with me." he answered and then I knew he was right. 

I pulled my cell phone out of my pocket and went to the call log, tapping on my Mom's number. She picked up right away like I figured she would as she knows I don't normally call her like this. I explained to her everything that happened and she said she would call the school herself to make sure they allow me to leave. The first thing she wanted me to do before anything was to go with Lucas to report what had happened in the hallway with Nathan. Together Lucas walked hand in hand to the office. We told them what had happened and I also explained that he's been harassing me for awhile now. The principal was very understanding of the situation. They excused me from a half of day at school and allowed Lucas to take me home. We decided not to go to lunch and just head straight to my place since his Mom didn't go to work until 3:00.  I sent Riley a text message letting her know that I had gone home for the day. She insisted she was coming by Lucas's later after we picked Kenzie up after school. 

I threw my backpack on the chair as I walked into my apartment. Lucas took a seat on the couch and I went into the kitchen to grab a drink. I settled on some ice tea then went over to sit with him. He hadn't been saying much and that kind of worried me because it is unlike him. I placed my drink on the coffee table the turned around to face him. I crawled into his lap putting my arms around his neck. 

"Talk to me." I said as I positioned myself in his lap. "What's wrong?" 

I heard him take in a breath then he looked up at me  "Well first off you got to stop moving in my lap otherwise I'm never going to be able to talk." 

I started giggling. "I'm sorry. But really what's wrong?" 

"Maya, I feel horrible that I've been the reason you have cried for two months. I never set out to hurt you." he replied and then it hit me. Nate's words really got to him.  "And it's my job to protect you and I couldn't be here." 

I looked at Lucas's eyes a small tear was sliding down his cheek. In the 6 months that I have known Lucas, I have only seen him cry once. I wiped his tear away and looked him dead in his beautiful green eyes. 

"Lucas, please don't cry." I sighed. "It doesn't matter what anyone else thinks about us or about you. Yes, I was upset when you left but we already knew that and you know what? We're together now so why dread on the past? I promise that he's never done anything like this to me before today. You're going to be with me now, so we don't have to worry about it." 

"It hurts me to think about someone scaring or hurting you and me not being there to help you." he replied. 

I nuzzled my face into his neck and he leaned back on the couch holding me in his arms.  I lifted my head up to look at him. 

"But you were my superman today." I replied before kissing him softly on the lips. 

"That will never change. " he said with a smile. 

Lucas and I decided to watch a movie to pass time before we had to go get Kenzie at school. I set my alarm on my phone just in case I zonked out because I have a tendency to do that during a movie. It was a good thing I had done that because we both fell asleep and woke up to the sound of my alarm going off. Falling asleep in his arms is something I never wanted to change.
