Chapter 1 : Dreaming a Memory

Alastair's POV

My eyes skimmed the words as I read at a speed a normal human couldn't possibly comprehend. I turned the page and momentarily, my eyes drifted away from the book in my hand and towards my bedroom door.

How long was she going to stand there?

Grinning, I returned to my book. She was just the cutest. I had to admit though; this was definitely unlike her. Usually, she would have just entered my room without hesitation. Did she think she would bother me if she came to see me?

I heard a shuffle outside my door. What was she doing out there?

I closed my book and stood up from the bed. She was just asking for attention. I walked to the door and leaning against it, I knocked on it gently. "Nikki, what are you doing?"

I heard a startled gasp and a scamper of feet. I moved in the blink of an eye, a mist of black engulfing me. I disappeared and reappeared outside in the hallway in front of a little, pink cheeked girl. She didn't notice me in time and she crashed into my knees. When she stepped back and craned her head up to look at me, her eyes widened with awe and a giant smile sprawled itself across her face.

"Magi!" she squealed, jumping on the spot.

I knelt to the ground in front of her, picked up her hands and held them between us. I rubbed my thumbs over her knuckles and gazed into her giant blue eyes. "Yes, Nikki. It is magic."

"Do again."

Chuckling, I brushed a hand through a long tendril of her black hair. On accident I pulled out a piece of food. Shaking my head I said with a sigh, "Nikki, why are you feeding your hair again? You really are the grubbiest girl I've ever met."

She gave me a cheesy smile and shrugged her shoulders like it was nothing. "Show me magi!" she demanded excitedly.

Unable to disobey her order, I stood up again but still didn't let go of her hands. She was tiny compared to my giant frame, but I suppose that was normal for her 5 year old self.

Holding her close I said, "Close your eyes." Then, imagining a place in my mind, a black mist started to form around us. No more than a second later and we were standing on the roof top of our manor.

I looked at the landscape around us, the height terrifyingly brilliant. She'll love it. "Open your eyes, Nikki, and take a look."

I didn't need to tell her twice. Still holding on to my hand, Nikki faced the downward sloping roof with gleaming eyes, a look of pure amazement on her face. She turned her head from side to side, taking in the late sunset that ringed the trees in front of us with a golden light.

"Bootaful," she murmured in her young voice, squeezing my hand.

I looked down at her, then at our joined hands. One day, they'll fit together. I smiled, "Isn't it?"

"Lookie!" she cried, rushing forward. If it wasn't for my grip on her hand, she would have slipped on the mossy slates beneath our feet. "They look like your eyes!" She pointed to the sky where clouds of various shades of purple littered the sky.

My eyes?

"You think so?"

She looked up at me, that smile she always wore lighting up her face. "Yeah!"

I loved that smile. If it were up to me, I would never let her go a day without smiling.

We admired the view for a few quiet moments, a breeze carrying auburn leaves past us. Her midnight hair picked up in the wind, the dark colour almost sparkling in the sunlight. She looked just like them. There was no denying she was a Creature Of Darkness.
