Chapter 37 : Human and Vampire Part 1

The sweet melody of her humming filled the air.

I watched Mommy's arms move behind my head in the mirror and felt the bristles of the hairbrush detangling my long black hair. I joined in half-heatedly, my feet bopping off the edge of the bed in tune with her humming.

She had the prettiest voice.

"Mommy, you're so bootaful," I said, admiring the way her curly dark hair spiralled down her shoulders in perfect ringlets.

She stopped humming and placed her hands on my shoulders, smiling at me in the mirror. "And so will you be, once you've all grown up."

"Alsa says I'm bootaful now."

Mommy chuckled, her round blue eyes shimmering in the sunlight that shone through the curtains. They were identical to mine. "You really love Alastair, don't you, sweetie?"

I grinned up at her, showcasing a missing front tooth. "Yup! We're going to be together forever! Just like you and Daddy."

Mommy smiled, but there was something about it that made it look a little sad. "Nikki, your existence in this world is very meaningful, you know that?"

I titled my head in question.

"You have an important role to play in this life," she said.

"What you mean?" I asked, brushing thin strands of hair from my face in annoyance.

"Your father and I love Alastair very dearly, and we know that you do too." She turned me on the bed and cupped my chubby cheeks, touching her nose with mine. "Nikki, you have to make sure Alastair keeps smiling, alright?"

"We always have fun, Mommy," I told her, hoping that would ease her worrying eyes. "We play games and laugh and Alsa always takes my nose." I crinkled my face and wondered if he had put it back on the right way last time. It looked okay in the mirror, didn't it? Or was my nose upside down?

"I know, baby. But you've noticed it too, yes? That face he makes sometimes? That sad face?"

I stopped touching my nose and nodded solemnly. "Me don't like it. But it goes away when he looks at me."

"Yes, it does." Just then the door to my large bedroom opened. Daddy walked in, gliding across the floor with long strides. His shoulder length hair was tied back with short pieces falling around his clean-shaven face.

"Because Alastair loves you just as much," Mommy said quickly, taking my hands in hers.

Daddy rounded the bed and sat on the other side of me across from Mommy. "But we still worry about him, so it's your job to look after him when we leave."

I looked at both my parents. "He's happy in this family. He will always be happy if we stay together."

Mommy squeezed my hands. "Listen, baby. Your father and I won't be on this Earth forever. That's why it's very important for you to be; to take our place. We leave Alastair in your hands. It's your job to look after and protect him. He will do the same for you."
