Chapter 25 : Throwing Words

Nikki's POV

"I'm sorry, what?"

Alastair continued to speak in that calm, smooth voice of his - which only served to scare me more.

"Do you remember when I told you, that like other supernatural creatures, I too believed Imperials would lead only to our annihilation?"

I nodded once, softly and stiffly, blue eyes frozen on him.

"That's because not a decade before your birth, I had never witnessed an Imperial with my own eyes. They saved me. Lady Marisa and Lord Emrik did more for me than I could ever hope to repay them for."

The sun shifted position, flat rays of white light twinkling between the trees outside my bedroom window. My eyes dipped to the thin lines between the floor boards, not really focusing on them but rather the streams of thoughts spilling into my mind, brows furrowed in deep determination trying to fathom it all.

"So you're saying..." I trailed off, not really understanding myself what he was saying.

But Alastair was two steps ahead. "Nikki, we" he gestured between us, "are not what you think we are. Lord Emrik and Lady Marisa were your parents. Not mine. Nevertheless, they were dear to me and many a time I would mistaken their kindness for the parents I never had."

His words sunk in like water tunnelling through a drain. I breathed, slowly and deeply, but that didn't stop my voice from shaking. "S-so your saying that we're not..."

He shook his head, a pitying look shifting over his face.

I pointed a shaky finger at him. "So y-you're not my b-brother?"

"No," he said softly.

I pointed to myself. "And I-I'm not your sister?"

Yet again he shook his head.

I took a deep breath, paused, then said in a rush, "I don't believe you."

How could I? To hear those words were something I'd only ever dreamed of.

"You don't believe me?" he quipped with disbelief. "After you just stated yourself that I am not an Imperial?"

"You could be lying."

No, I knew for a fact that he couldn't be lying. Otherwise, people would be after him and not just me.

But he had to be lying.

"Your name," I blurted. "You call yourself Alastair Whitely."
