Chapter 16 : Unraveling Minds

I didn't go to school that day.

I couldn't, not in the state I was. I couldn't stop shaking, even after the fear left me. When I eventually pushed Alastair out of my room, I buried myself under the covers and laid there shivering.

The day passed and I realised I must have fallen asleep. When I pulled back the covers, a rush of cold air hit me. The room was blanketed in darkness. There was no moonlight, not even the tiniest hint, and yet, I could still see.

Everything was shaded in greys.

"Daddy!"

A little girls fearful scream echoed in my mind. I knew who it was. Me. That little girl was me. I couldn't deny it anymore.

"Wait! Daddy's not with us. Daddy!"

I pulled my knees into my chest and dug my nails into my scalp. My hair was in a state of tangles, falling over my face and shoulders like a torn rag.

"Nikki, listen to me. We have to leave now. Hold onto me."

There was a loud crash. "No!" I pulled away from Mommy and ran towards the door, throwing it open. "Don't hurt us!"

"Worthless creature." A man from the bottom of the staircase raised his pointed gun at me. He disappeared from sight only to reappear in a burst of black smoke directly in front of me. I felt the coolness of gun's barrel pressed into my temple.

"Nikki!" Alastair called out.

"Don't you dare touch my child." Mommy flicked her wrist and the mans arm twisted. Now he held the gun to himself.

He grit his teeth as he tried to fight against the invisible force, spitting and cursing loudly. Then the gun went off and blood began to pour from the hole it had created between his eyes. He fell, but not before throwing an arm out and shoving me back so hard I lifted off the ground. My legs hit the staircase railing and I tipped back, but there was nothing there to catch me and I went over.

I screamed, wincing just before I smashed through the cupboard below. Something caught me, blocking the impact as the cupboard broke into splinters. The smoke cleared and I looked down to see Alastair holding me, blood over his left eye. His face twisted when he looked over my head. I saw the man behind me, his towering shadow holding a knife. I screamed again and Alastair's arms tightened around me.

"Alastair! Nikki!" Daddy yelled our names and then the man was no longer looming over us. I turned over my shoulder and saw Father with his hand outstretched towards us, the vampire impaled on the coat racks.

Daddy's front was to us and with everything happening he couldn't have noticed the Hunter come up behind him, shooting a crossbow at such a close range it cut right through him and penetrated the wall above the staircase. Father stumbled, whipping around to kill the Hunter. But then another threw a weapon across the room and it pierced straight through Daddy's chest. Then another and another. It happened so quickly, I couldn't work out who did it. Daddy fell to his knees and just as a vampire thought it was their chance to slice an Imperial's head off, Mother appeared behind them and broke their neck. She caught Daddy before he fell.
