Mrs. Cade actually loves Johnny so much. When she became pregnant with her son, Mr. Cade got very angry and upset and tried to convince his wife that there was no point in caring for a child. She feels bad every time she abuses Johnny. The only reason she hurts him along with her husband is because just before Johnny was born, Mr. Cade threatened her, saying that if she shows any affection towards the child, he will leave this family.
