v. annie to the oakley

She hated any other drug that wasn't able to be smoked.

Oakley was never one to use coke, she wasn't too fond of the idea of sniffing a powder to get high. Pills were okay, but she didn't condone narcotics.

She had heard from her friends in other high schools that they were starting to use heroin, but she quickly shut it down. She made the Cannibals promise to never use a drug that goes directly into the bloodstream; they may be young and stupid, but they're not complete idiots.

Sitting in her English Literature class, she thought about how she was the most responsible in the group.

Free was the definition of her nickname; she never listened to what anyone told her, Calvin was too much of a stoner to be serious about anything, Harvey is too brooding and knew he didn't have to do anything since he was born with a silver spoon in his mouth, but Finn...

Oakley trailed off and thought about Finn. She was the first one to talk to him when he first came to school in the US last year.

All of the girls were swooning at his looks, but none of them had the courage to speak to him like she did, and before the school knew it, he was made into a Cannibal.

Speaking honestly, she didn't want Finn involved with the group. She felt like he would have joined the football team and have been set with a scholarship to a top university.

But Harvey got curious as to who she was talking to, and they inevitably became friends and made his way into the Cannibals.

The last shred of innocence she could have had was ripped away from her.

Her mind then strayed over to Lennon, and she thought about her. She could be the innocent one, for all of them, especially Harvey.

Oakley wasn't so sure if she would even talk to her again. After what had happened in Paradiso, she didn't know if Lennon would look at them in the same light anymore.

The bell rang, startling her out of her thoughts. She threw her books into her bag and headed out the classroom to the Cannibal Room.

She knew Calvin was most likely in there, either blazing up or doing last night's homework.

When she unlocked the door though, no one was in the room.

She scrunched her eyebrows together. That was strange. There was usually one of them in there when she usually came into the room.

Dropping her bag on the floor, she made herself comfortable on a box in the corner and pulled out a book.

Biting her nail, she flipped open to middle, picking up where she last left off.

A couple of minutes later, Oakley heard the door open. She didn't spare a glance at whoever came in.

"That a good book." Her head raised up and met Finn's eyes.

He closed the door shut behind him, and walked over.

"You've read it before?" She asked, shutting the book.

He nodded and smiled. "John Green is a god."

"Looking For Alaska is much better than The Fault In Our Stars," she said, rolling her eyes at him.

"How did you know that was my favourite?" He asked, a grin lighting up his face.

"You seem like the type of person who would cry when Gus died," she responded, smirking at him.

"Shut up," he muttered, knowing it was true.

Laughing, she poked his side with the tip of her shoe. "You know, this is the lengthiest conversation we've had since junior year."

His shoulders sagged. "Yeah, I know. Sorry."

Oakley shrugged. "What are you sorry for? You made friends, you should be happy."

He shook his head. "But I abandoned the first one I made, so that makes me a shitty person."

"You're not, so it's okay," she reassured him.

The bell rang, signalling the end of her free period and the start of AP US History.

"Um, I have to run, I can't be late for Gym again," Finn said, awkwardly rubbing the back of his head. "See you around."

She waved as the door closed.

After he left, she shook her head. In reality, it wasn't okay. It wasn't okay that he became friends with her friends and abandoned her. She felt used, as if she was just a free pass into friendship.

It wasn't fair.
