“Operation Steal Emery’s Phone is a go,” Mary whispers, trying to sound like she’s in a spy movie. She turns the nob on my front door when I cover her hand with mine, stopping her.

“You really couldn’t have figured out a better code name?” I ask with raised eyebrows. “I mean, if someone overheard, wouldn’t it be pretty obvious?”

Mary puts her hands on her hips and shoots me a look. “I don’t see you coming up with anything better.”

I roll my eyes. “Touché.” I open the door and we both step inside to the sadly non-air-conditioned house. Trying to act casual, we head towards the kitchen where we find Emery. He’s sitting at the table on his phone and I can’t tell if he’s texting or just fooling around.

“Hey Emery,” I say casually, leaning against the table. He looks up and gives me a grin as Mary starts running her fingers through her hair, initiating Plan B. Plan A was to just take the phone, but it seems Emery has his hands on it right now.

“Oh my god!” Mary screeches, jumping up and down. She starts shaking her head like a maniac, luckily grabbing Emery’s attention.

“What’s wrong, Mary?” I ask, trying my best at acting. My voice is clearly scripted however Mary is acting too ridiculous for Emery to notice. He sets his phone down on the table before standing up and moving to my side.

“I think there’s a bug in my hair!” She starts jumping again, throwing her hair around. “Get it out! Get it out now!”

I hold my hands up in front of me and take a step back. “I’m not touching a bug. Help her, Emery.”

Emery rolls his eyes, obviously annoyed at our silly bug problem. He takes a step towards her as I take a step backwards, quickly snatching his phone before he can see me again. Quickly, I move into the other room and pull out my own cell.

“Where is it?” I hear Emery ask, as Mary continues to freak out. I start coping Alana’s number into my own phone as quickly as possible.

“I don’t know!” Mary yells. “I’ve been shaking my hair around to get it out!”

When I’m done, I’m tempted to go through Emery’s inbox. For a moment, my thumb hovers over the enter key, which would click into it. Instead, I take a deep breath and move into the other room before I can. I give Mary a look as I set the phone on the table and Mary suddenly stops jumping.

“I think it’s out now,” she shrugs, grabbing an apple off my counter. Emery turns around and gives me an are-you-kidding-me look. I give him a smirk and shrug my own shoulders.

“Well,” I mumble, motioning for Mary to follow me. “We’re going to go for a walk.” Before Emery can respond, we both run towards the back door and burst out it at full speed.

“I could be an actress,” Mary notes as we head towards the forest, the last place Emery will look for us.

“Yeah, maybe on a one star soap opera,” I laugh, only giving me a smack in my side by Mary. “Anyways, we should probably call before Emery figures out something’s up.”

“Go ahead.” Mary raises her eyebrows as I pull out my cell phone. “Put it on speaker.” The dial tone buzzes as we step into the treeline and I click call on Alana’s number. Taking a deep breath, I will all of my confidence to surface as I take a deep breath.

“Hello?”

For a moment, my breath catches in my throat. I bite my lip, worrying that I’m not going to say anything when I remember I’m doing this for Emery. “Hi Alana, its River.”
