Chapter 10

May-Junior

[Niall’s POV]

“You’re a mess mate,” Zayn said as he sat on the edge of my bed.

I didn’t say anything as Louis and Harry sat down on the floor next to my bed. They had pity written across their faces and I knew I had to look pathetic.

It’s been two weeks since Liam’s left me, and honestly, he’s shown no traces of himself around me. He avoids me at all costs at school and parks on the opposite side of the lot. I know he wants what’s best for me, but what he doesn’t realize; he is what’s best for me.

I sniffled and shrugged myself a bit more under the covers. Finals were over and Louis’ graduation was approaching rapidly, but nothing was making me happy. I thought this would be the week that I invited Liam with me to Greg’s wedding, but now I would be going alone. I felt more tears flow freely down my face as I thought about what could’ve, or rather, what should’ve been.

“Niall? Oh gosh, he’s crying again,” Louis mumbled as he crawled into the bed beside me. He held me as I sobbed a little bit harder. I cried more and more, because I wanted Liam’s arms around me. I wanted him to come back. I wanted a second chance because I knew I messed up.

“You know he’s just as bad Ni,” Harry said as he got on his knees to look at me from an eye-level.

“He is?” I asked hoarsely. I hadn’t really spoken since I had been spending most of my time crying.

“What? You thought he’d be dandy?” Zayn asked bitterly.

“Zayn!” Louis snapped. Zayn shut his mouth and mumbled an apology. I know Zayn didn’t mean to snap, but I know things have been tense. The boys had to choose between hanging out with either Liam or I, but I usually make up some lame excuse about my homework, so I don’t really hang with them that much.

“It’s alright Lou,” I mumbled as I shrugged out of his embrace and flopped back down onto my pillow. “I’d be mad at myself too. It’s all my fault.”

“What?” Louis asked.

“My fault. All my fault,” I mumbled before beginning to sob again.

“Shhh, it’s okay Ni,” Louis said as he gingerly stroked my hair.

“Screw this!” Harry spat out as he marched out of my room and slammed the door behind him. I peeked up and cried harder.

“Niall, please stop crying,” Zayn asked as he rubbed my back.

“B-b-but Harry’s gone, and he’s not coming back because he doesn’t love me because I can’t do anything right!” I wailed. Zayn looked at me confused, but Louis had an understanding look placed upon his face.

“Mate, Liam will come back,” Louis cooed.

“I wasn’t-” I started but Louis just shook his head.

“I knew what you meant Niall. You’re not that hard to read,” Louis said with a sad smile. “Look, do you like Liam?”

“I love him Lou,” I sniffled.

“Of course you do mate,” Zayn said cheerily. “And you know what they say about love.”

“No?” I was confused, and Zayn clearly didn’t know either.

“Well, um, it’s something like ‘If it’s true love set it free, if it comes back it was meant to be’. Or maybe that was a bird,” Zayn said thoughtfully. The quizzical look made me crack a smile and let out a little chuckle.
