The cold morning air flew through my face and shredded my lungs.

My arms spread out, legs far apart, I had just awkwardly thrown myself out the window, in hopes of escaping my psycho teacher.

However, had I considered the consequences that I might not be able to summon my flying powers, maybe I would have re-thought my motives. But then again, it was either out the window or under my science teacher. You choose.

But now, as I was in the air, I couldn't help but feel excited. Mr. Hauge tried yet again to get me but I still had gotten away from his slimy claws. I was unstoppable.

And that was what lead me to flying.

I mean, I don't have wings, but I certainly knew that I was levitating and that I was not going to fall to my death onto my several classmates down below me.

I flew forward, regaining my composure, taking a deep breath, and throwing myself higher into the air to avoid people looking at me. I made sure I was alive, tried to ignore the pounding headache, and decided to figure out where I was going. The police station? That sounded good...

But wait, what proof was there? I mean, if the police looked in Mr. Hauge's classroom, they'd just see desks thrown all over the place, and Mr. Hauge would probably say I just spilled his coffee on him and broke both his wrist and arm. In fact, all the evidence pointed to me, actually, and now I wished that I had thought about that before I went all crazy on my teacher.

Self defense. That's all you need to know.

I was barely coming across those thoughts when someone hit me from behind. My initial thought: it was an airplane and I was dead.

But then I realized it was a human being. David Pearson to be exact. And he was flying.

"Avaley! What the heck are you doing up here?" David bellowed, wrapping me in his arms and holding me close to him. "That's nice that you can fly but honestly, during school?"

I pushed myself away from him and hovered a few inches away, staring at his cute expression. "What the heck am I doing here?" I repeated. "My... My freaking science teacher just assaulted me and I barely got out with my life and you're mad at me?"

"Why does it matter what I think?" David asked. "I was never in charge of you."

"And where were you?!" I cried, feeling tears in my eyes. "Yesterday you wanted to help me, and that's nice, but today you were too late!" I brushed a tear with my hand and continued my rant. "What if I hadn't been able to fight back, huh, David? What if you came into the classroom a little bit later? What would you have seen? Would you have been able to help me then?"

"Avaley," David said softly, welcoming me into his arms again. He patted my hair as I sniffled. "I never knew that you needed help. I thought you were fine."

"I thought I was too," I said. "I thought I could handle him."

"And yet you just destroyed his classroom."

I pulled myself back and started to fly in the opposite direction from the school. "It was horrible, David," I whispered. "I was so scared, and he was so... Excited."

"Avaley, I'm so sorry," David said, coming up next to me, flying at the same pace as me. "I was so frustrated about... Yesterday." a small smile tugged at the corners of my lips and I couldn't help but laugh.

"Yeah, that was kind of interesting, wasn't it?" I asked. "I mean, honestly? Throwing me out the window? That was the way to make me fly?"

He shrugged innocently. "Well, it worked, didn't it?"

I laughed and then remembered where we were. I looked at David suspiciously. "You're flying, aren't you?" I mused. "So you really do have the same powers as me."

"Guilty as charged."

"Huh." I nodded. "But you gotta admit, these powers aren't all what people would think they are. They could get us killed."

"Us? That's a new perspective. But yeah, pretty much," David said. "Wow, you've really gotten acquainted with this, haven't you, Ms. Camber?"

"Guilty as charged, Mr. Pearson." he smiled at me and my heart took a plummet, which made me think of Sean and what he could do to me with his smile, and then that lead my thoughts scrambling back to...

"School!" I gasped, making David jump. "Are we gonna go back, or - "

David frowned. "Mr. Hauge just saw you and me jump out the window and soar into the sky. He tried to attack you in his classroom. I don't think there's anything left for us there."

"So where should we go?" I asked.

He smiled again. "I was waiting for you to say that," he said calmly and held out his hand. I took this as a sign. A sign that something better was waiting for us. And that David knew how to get there.

"Okay then, Mr. Pearson," I said, taking his hand. "Away we go."
