discussing surgery

We made it down to the conference room and sat down. Other doctors who I assumed would be performing the surgery on me. They allowed us to sit at the back and one doctor began to speak.

"The first thing I'd like to say to you all... -" He gestured to the back of the room where we were sitting "- is congratulations. Now the overview of the surgery." He says opening a binder in front of him. "This procedure should be considered when someone seems likely to die without the surgery and no other options are available.." He read off of a paper

"The evaluation process for a lung transplant is usually long and complicated." Another doctor spoke up "When we begin the surgery I will make an incision on either side." He says showing us with his hands and we nod "Complete unconsciousness is maintained with general anesthesia during the surgery"

"Okay.." My mother says with a nod "Recovery?" She asks

"The time to fully recover after having a lung transplant varies. Some people may leave the hospital within a week. However, it's not unusual to be in the hospital for two weeks or longer after having the surgery. So, Maya don't be alarmed" He says with a smile

I chuckled "Don't worry. I won't be" I replied

"Your recovery, however, will not be a walk in the park. You will need to have regular physical therapy, education sessions, tests and frequent visits back here for us to be sure you are taking well to the new organs. Any questions?" He finished

"How long with I live?" I asked and my parents were a little bit upset I asked the question.

"You can live as long as God allows you to afterward." He said with a smile

"Okay" I smiled back and chuckled

"You can head back to your room and the doctors and I will discuss." He said and a nurse took us back to my room. I was eating in silence until my mom asked me a question

"Are you excited about the surgery?" She asked me

"Yeah.." I replied

"When is the baby due?" I asked my mother eyeing her stomach that was getting visibly bigger.

"I have an appointment tomorrow morning. That will tell me that. I am one month and three days pregnant" She read from her cell phone "Baby is about the size of a grain of rice"

"Wow. What? That's so small" I replied continuing to eat my food and thinking about the surgery.
