On a plane, I'm sitting alone in the corner with my bag. It's all a very terrifying experience.
I was escorted immediately here, thinking about Mom's words, and the promise I made to myself.
"Hi. I'm Trina." A girl with electric green hair says, sitting down next to me. Wow. Bold choice.
"Charlie." I say, looking up at her.
"I'm a Four."
"Five."
"Looks like me and you got to stick together then, seeing as how the others are all bratty twos and threes."
"Okay." I reply.
"Something on your mind? You look like you were crying for ages."
"I don't really want to be in the Selection." I whisper to her. "But my sister needs the money."
"Well, good. I don't feel a need to be here either. The Prince is quite ugly, to be frank with you." Several of the other girls on our plane glare at her as she says this loudly. Lowering her voice, she continues. "I need to become a Three so I can be a scientist. An alchemist. It's really important to me."
"Now that sounds like a real goal." I smile.
"Yeah."
"I also want to use some of my money to help some of the lower castes in Carolina." I say.
"Admirable. Fist bump it." She holds out her fist and I look at her, mystified.
"Just bump your fist against mine." She bumps her other fist against hers, and then I do that. "Now, we just have to stay long enough to get enough money." Trina nudges me.
"That is going to be the most difficult thing I've ever done."
"Nonsense. Just be yourself."
"If the Prince read our applications, then he knows how much I don't want to be at the castle."
"Then show him that you were wrong."
"Yeah. That won't be hard." I roll my eyes.
"Me not wanting to be here won't stop me from being the most scandalous contestant. Just watch what I wear tonight."
"Nothing?" I guess.
"Close to that." She winks at me. I stare at her, horrified. "I'll be the slut, and you can be the innocent one. Best friends for life."
"Okay." I say, still horrified.
"Another fist bump?"
"That's asking too much." I laugh.

Updates of this and anything else may be few and far between for the next few days. Today I'm having my birthday party and then tomorrow's my birthday! I'll be doing a lot of writing on Monday though, before I head back to school on Tuesday!
