The dispute

At lunch Emma sat with me again and acted completely normal. She didn't ask any questions or even look at me suspiciously. She just talked about typical Emma things and that scared me more than anything else.

"Hi Blake" Sammy Rivera smiled walking up to my table. She was the head cheerleader and as far as I knew she really didn't like me. I didn't understand why she was suddenly talking to me.

"Uh...hi?" I frowned. She was standing with a couple of other cheerleaders who again didn't like me. They were all pretty good friends with Adren so naturally, I didn't trust their intentions.

"We were just wondering what we're doing for the fundraiser?" She placed her hands on her hips and waited expectantly.
"What fundraiser?" I asked.
"Wow. I thought the school captains were supposed to know this stuff" she scoffed rolling her eyes, "the state cheerleading fundraiser! Not to name any names but a couple of girls on our team are too poor to pay for transport".

"Oh, right" I nodded, "Uh...well do you guys have any ideas?"
"Seriously?" Sammy raised an eyebrow.
"What?"
"This is so unprofessional. Aren't we gonna have a meeting? And how do YOU not have an idea of what we're doing yet! I mean state is only 2 months away!"

"I'm sorry Sammy, I've got other stuff on my mind at the moment. I'll put in an announcement for a meeting. We can talk about it then. As for ideas, why don't you go talk to Adren, I'm sure she'd be more helpful than me" I smiled hoping my response was sufficient enough for her.

"She'd be a better school captain, that's for sure" one of the other girls said flicking her hair over her shoulder.
"Sorry" I mumbled.
"Don't be a bitch Becca, we wouldn't need to fundraise if it wasn't for your moms stupid teaching job, I'd probably make more money working at yogurt land" Sammy said before flashing me a false smile, "sorry about her, bye Blake".

She walked away flanked by the two other girls.
"Blake-ly" I corrected with a sigh.
"Those girls are so fake" Emma said staring Sammy and her cheerleaders down from across the cafeteria. "You say that like it's news" I mumbled.

"It's honestly gotten to the point where I would rather them just be mean upfront" she continued, "except Chris, I think he's genuine, and I like him. I don't know if I would approve of a close friend of mine dating him though".

"Mmh"  I nodded picking at my salad.
"He's great and all, but I know who he can be, being more than friends with him would be pretty dangerous".
"Yeah" I agreed. I knew exactly where she was going with this, I just wanted to see exactly how far she'd take it.

"The fact that Adren would eat anyone who touched him alive is another turn off. Adren can be scary" Emma said staring at me pointedly. "Yeah, no I totally agree Em" I said.
"You do?" She asked raising an eyebrow, "so you wouldn't go there?"

"Go where?" Of course I wouldn't, the only reason I was avoiding answering was because I wanted to hear her say exactly what she thought without censoring or sugarcoating it.
"You know, mess around with Chris".
I shrugged, "if I did?"
She raised her eyebrows and dropped her jaw, "I knew it!"

"Knew what Emma?" I asked innocently.
"You and Chris! Are you crazy?! His jumper, the phone call! I bet you talking to Lucas outside class was about Chris!"
I smiled and shook my head, "there is nothing going on between-"

"Blakely Wood to the office please" a bored nazely voice requested from the intercom.

I sighed and packed up my lunch.
"Again?" Emma raised an eyebrow. "Again" I nodded, "do you want a ride home after school?" I offered.
"No, I'm gonna go to the library for a little after school".
"I should join you..." I said mostly to myself.
"I'm not opposed" she smiled.
"But I can't" I finished, "I'm meeting up with my dad this afternoon".

"Is that the new code name for Chris?" She folded her arms in annoyance.
"Oh my god" I groaned, "there is nothing going on between me and Chris!"

Emma opened her mouth to say something but then she averted her eyes behind me. The expression on her face suggested the wrong person was behind me when I said that.
I turned around and standing a couple of inches in front of me was Adren.

She folded her arms and stared me down. Adren has about 5 inches on me, so even if she wasn't trying, she would always intimidate me.

I took a couple of steps back and leant back onto the table just to be further away from her.
"So" she said looking me up and down, "why would there be anything going on between you and Chris?"

"There isn't" I mumbled looking down at my shoes. "For your sake, I hope so" she took a couple of steps closer to me, closing the gap I'd made between us, "I don't know why Chris and Lucas have suddenly taken an interest in you, but don't take that as an invitation to hit on either one of them. I've already told you this once and I'll tell you again, girls like you don't date guys like them, you're a short anorexic dork, they're tall, popular hotties. Know your place, freak".

"I'm not hitting on anyone Adren, it's all just a misunderstanding. I need to go" I tried to walk around her but she side stepped me and blocked me from leaving.

"God Adren, how much of a jealous bitch can you be?" Emma said standing up. I'd forgotten she was there, watching the whole disputed, "even if Blakely were seeing Chris, it's none of your business, he's just not into you. As far as I'm concerned, he prefers Blakely over you and that's not going to change until you do. Face the facts, you're only embarrassing yourself".

I raised an eyebrow at Emma who had made her way to my side. "Why don't you go get your ass kissed by Melissa for some validation, because I can tell that the realization that you mean nothing to him has shattered your confidence a little" she purred in a condescending tone.

I had never imagined I would hear Emma sound so harsh. Sure she'd told people to go away, and when she talked to Chris she was mostly just joking, but with Adren, she was just being absolutely ruthless.

"I'm sorry, who are you?" Adren said glancing at Emma for a short moment. "If you don't get out of my face right now I'll be your worst fucking nightmare" Emma promised.
"Emma" I frowned.
"Whatever dork. You can keep your empty threats to yourself, I don't want anything to do with your face" she whipped around and without a second look, sashayed back to her table.

"What's with you" I frowned scanning Emma's sullen expression.
"It's a secret" she glowered flopping back down at her spot. I stared her down for a moment longer before giving up, "we're not like them Em. A simple 'go away' would've been sufficient enough". "I was mad ok! A simple thank you would be sufficient enough too".

"Ok, I need to go" I shook my head trying to make sense of what had just happened.
Emma kept her spot at the table as I scurried off to the office.
