The walk to the car was incredibly awkward, well, for me anyway. Lucas didn't seem to realize that anything was wrong.

"Keys?" He held his hand out as we got closer to the car.
I sighed pulling my keys from my back pocket. With Lucas, it was best to choose your battles. Plus, I probably wasn't in the best mood to drive.

"So where's Emma?" He asked getting into the drivers seat. I jumped into the passengers side and folded my legs up on the seat, "hospital...you're not coming with me are you?"
"Obviously" he mumbled pulling out of the parking spot.

I bit my lip and looked at him. He was staring straight at the road, but he eventually felt my glare and looked at me, I averted my gaze straight away.
"What?" He asked.
"Nothing, don't worry" I murmured fiddling with a loose thread on my pants.

"Blakely" he sighed.
"Lucas" I mimicked him.
"Am I uninvited? I won't come in if that's what Emma wants, I'm aware she hates me, it's ok".
"It's not that" I sighed uncrossing my legs, "Lucas, if you don't want me staying with you, just say so! I can suck it up and stay at my place".

"What?" He laughed, "Where is this coming from?" "You're embarrassed by me" I stated. "No I'm not" he argued.
"Yes you are!"
He took a deep breath before talking again, "I'm not embarrassed by you, I don't get where this is coming from".

"Uh, my mouth?" I suggested in a duh tone.
"Ha-Ha" he said dryly.
"Just to make this easier on you, I'll go back to my place tonight, ok?"
"Blakely!"
"No, it's fine Lucas! You don't need to feel guilty or responsible for me. Letting me stay last night was really nice of you, you don't owe me anything more, that includes an explanation".

"I didn't let you stay because I think I owe you something, I let you stay because you're my friend and I care about you. Ok?"
I sighed and looked out the window so I wouldn't smile.
"Now will you please stop being so difficult?" He asked speeding up slightly. I didn't say anything else after that. I had probably overreacted and I didn't feel like hearing Lucas have a point about my attitude again.

We pulled up into the parking lot of the hospital where Emma's grandad was staying. "So you're coming in?" I asked nervously as I watched Lucas unbuckle his seatbelt.
"Unless you want to hide me in the car?" Lucas raised an eyebrow. "When you say hide you make it sound worse than it is" I murmured pulling my seatbelt off.

"Well that's what you're doing, right?" Lucas asked, "you're hiding that you're friends with me from garden gnome". I glared at him and he smiled before correcting himself, "I mean Emma".

"I'm only hiding it because I know exactly how Emma will react and it's not going to be pretty" I attempted to justify lying to my best friend lamely. I didn't make an effort to move out of my seat, I suddenly felt awful for wanting to hide Lucas from her, I couldn't keep using her situation with her grandad and my own assumptions of how she'd react as an excuse for lying to her.

"Maybe I should stay here" Lucas said pulling his seatbelt back on. I looked at him and bit my lip thoughtfully. Only a few minutes ago I was worried he was embarrassed by me, and here I was, wanting to hide him in my car.
"No, I want you to come with me" I decided pushing my door open.

"Wait really?" Lucas asked slowly stepping out of the car. "Yeah, It's no big deal, right?" I wasn't sure if I was trying to convince myself or him of that.
"Yeah, 100% doesn't matter" Lucas nodded following me through the parking lot.

As we stepped inside the hospital I began to feel slightly nervous. Maybe this wasn't the best time to let Emma know I was friends with the guy who had tormented us for years...but at the same time, it also wasn't the best time to be deceiving her. She was going thought enough already.

"Hello, What can I do for you?" The nurse at the front desk asked as Lucas and I walked towards her. "Um, I'm here to see Jack McDorman". That's what Emma had told me to say when I arrived.
The lady tapped on the keys on her computer before scanning over the screen with her eyes then giving me a skeptical glance, "Are you family?"

"Um-"
"Blakely!" Emma's unmistakable voice squealed. My head shot to her direction and I grinned at her rushing over to me. She was smiling like a crazy person but the bags under her eyes, her oversized grey clothing and the birds nest that was her hair told me she wasn't usually smiling.

"Hey Em" I said taking a few steps to close the gap between us to hug her. When we pulled apart she was frowning over me shoulder. I didn't have to check to know who she was looking at. "So how's your grandad?" I asked in a desperate attempt to pull her attention back to me. "My grandad's the same as he has been all week" she mumbled, her eyes still on Lucas, "What the hell is he doing here?"

I sighed and shoved my hands into my back pocket, "Lucas and I are-"
"If you say dating I'm actually going to punch you in the face" Emma threatened.
"What?! No! God no" I exclaimed, "I was going to say we're friends. I'm driving him back to his place after school but I had to see you so I thought why not bring him. He doesn't have to see your grandad, obviously".

"You're friends with Lucas Everett?" Emma raised an eyebrow. I looked at Lucas who had his arms folded and his eyes on me. He didn't look uncomfortable at all, he looked...relaxed. "Well yeah, I am. He's not that bad Em, like with Chris" I explained.

"Today was supposed to be about me and my grandad Blakely. Why the fuck would you bring him here?!" Emma yelled throwing an icy glare at Lucas
I looked around at all the gawking eyes before saying, "Em, please. He can wait out here".
"No" she snapped, "I want him to leave".

I wanted to argue with her, but I knew it was best not to. Emma was more important right now, and I had been stupid to think that this was a good idea. I looked over my shoulder at Lucas and frowned apologetically, "you can wait for me in the car".

"Ok" he shrugged, "I hope your grandad gets better Emma". She folded her arms and rolled her eyes. I sighed and watched at Lucas left the hospital.

"You're a freaking idiot, Blakely" Emma sighed.
"Look he's gone now. We can talk about this later" I said hopefully.
"Fine" Emma murmured leading the way to her grandfathers room.
