Trying to prove a point

I had finally gotten Lucas to go to sleep. While he was upstairs I was skimming through my homework for all my classes. I had been way too distracted and now I was walking on thin ice, my A average was at risk and if I didn't knuckle down, I would drop to a B. Lucas wasn't an excuse anymore, honestly he never really was an excuse, not a good one anyway.

I didn't realize how long I'd been working for until my phone started buzzing, when I checked to see who it was I saw the time was 9:15pm. My mom should've been home already, that was what the text message was about, she was letting me know that she probably wouldn't be home tonight, something about having stacks of work in her office that she couldn't leave, oh also, there was pasta in the fridge.

So the odds were in my favor, I had feared waking Lucas up and making him hide when my mom got home, or even worse, making him leave. Despite how mean he had been lately, that was something I never wanted to do after he let me stay with him for nothing and for as long as I needed.

My tummy made a loud grumble when I finished reading the text. Just the word pasta reminded me of how starving I was. I climbed up off the floor, where I'd been for the past few hours then dragged my feet to the kitchen. I didn't have to ask Lucas to know he would be hungry, another thing I knew about weed was that it supposedly made you hungry.

It was dead silent in my house. Something I'd become used to ever since the divorce, but that didn't mean I liked it. Even though I knew Lucas was upstairs I still felt like I was alone and the silence only made that feel more real.
I was standing with my back to the stairwell when I heard a sudden thud from behind me.
Naturally, in regular Blakely fashion, I jumped and let out a small squeal. I was scared and didn't want to, but I spun around anyway to see who was standing behind me. Obviously it was Lucas. I don't know why I didn't assume that to begin with.

He was leaning against the railing of the stairs with his arms folded and an amused expression plastered across his face.
"Oh shut up" I murmured.
"I didn't say anything" he laughed.
I turned back around and stopped the microwave 1 second before it rang through the house then pulled the large bowl of alfredo pasta out.

"Hungry?" I asked.
"I guess" he said walking closer to me. My breath hitched and I completely froze when he stopped right next to me, his arm was brushing against mine and I could feel his breath on my neck. I was sure he wasn't doing it on purpose, but regardless, I had become hyper aware of Lucas, being this close to him made me nervous, especially after the actual kiss and the almost kiss that was only a few hours ago. I wondered if he would bring that up or if he even remembered it.

"That looks good, I'm guessing your mom made it?" He asked sliding his finger across edge of the bowl licking the sauce off his finger. "She did" I nodded walking to the opposite end of the kitchen where I knew the bowls were, I could've used the ones on the drying rack right next to us, but I wasn't about to let an opportunity to move away from him go.

"So you guys are cool now?" He questioned raising his eyebrow. "I wouldn't say that" I mumbled. "So?" He asked expectantly.
"Look, Lucas you don't have to act like you care just because I helped you. It's fine, I get why you don't like me" I mumbled the last part and opened the cabinet above my head so I could distract myself and him from how uncomfortable I was.

"Who said I don't like you?"
I managed to reach two small bowls before turning around to look Lucas straight in the eyes for the first time, "the way you've been acting ever since I...you know".
"Ever since you kissed me" he said it without hesitation, unlike me who avoided to word like it was the plague. "Yeah" I nodded.
Lucas sighed and ran his fingers through his messy hair, "I don't know what to tell you Blakely, you kissing me was a mistake, I had to let you see that".
