Chapter Forty-Six:: Down The Rabbit Hole
S4E14

I wake up with my head laying on Klaus' chest. His breathing is regular and his eyes are closed. I look at him for a while until his voice breaks the silence. "Staring is rude, love." he says with a smirk, his eyes still closed. I roll my eyes and say, "I wasn't staring, Klaus. I was simply admiring the sleeping hybrid." He opens his eyes and asks, "So I'm worth admiring?" I laugh and push him. My eyes land on my charm bracelet, but I push back my sadness. "Are you alright, love?" Klaus asks, worry lacing his accent. My eyes snap from the bracelet to him. "Hm? Yeah, fine." I say and send him a reassuring smile. "Alright." he says and nods, but it's clear in his eyes that he is still worried. "I promise, I'm fine." I say and he nods. "I believe you." he says and I nod. "Good." I say and he smirks as he leans closer to me. "Good." he says, our lips almost touching. "Good." I whisper. As he starts to place his lips on mine the door opens and Caroline's voice is heard throughout the house. "Good morning!" she calls out and walks into the kitchen. I move away from Klaus who has a smirk on his face. "Wait! Were you two having a moment?" she asks and I shake my head. "No. It's fine, Care." I say and she smiles. "Great! Well I brou--" she starts, but the ringing of her phone cuts her off. "Give me a minute." she says and pulls out her phone. "It's Elena." she says and I roll my eyes. She answers the phone and I listen to the conversation.

(C&E for phone convo)

C: Tell me you're not serious.
E: I wish I weren't. When we got back from looking for Jeremy, Shane and Bonnie were gone too. Shane needs Bonnie to cast a spell on Jeremy's tattoo in order to find the cure, and he managed to sneak them both out from under our noses.
C: Well, where's Damon in all this?
E: We had an argument. I thought he was just taking a walk, but then when we went to the beach, we saw signs of a struggle.
C: Meaning what?
E: Meaning somebody probably jumped him and then grabbed him!
C: Do you think Shane took him?
E: No, I mean, he's not strong enough to take Damon on, even with the element of surprise. He must have someone, or at least a few someones helping him.
C: I'm so sorry. I wish I was there to help.
E: Well, maybe there's something you can do from home.
C: Anything. Tell me.
E: So Shane's looking for the cure. We think we can find him. We have pictures of Jeremy's tattoo, but we just can't translate the map.
C: Unless you get the Hunter's Sword from Klaus.
E: Exactly.
"He'll never give up the sword." I hear Rebekah say. "Yeah, but if anyone's gonna get him to give it up, it's Caroline and Ali." Stefan points out. "He will never give up the sword, not even for Talia. He's terrified we'll use the cure against him to make him mortal, and even if he wasn't, he wouldn't want any of us to derive a moment's worth of happiness from being human." Rebekah says. "Well, maybe he doesn't have to give it up. I mean, Klaus is stuck in Elena's house by Bonnie's spell. He can't go anywhere. There's only so many places you can hide a three-foot piece of metal." Stefan says.
C: I'll find it, don't worry. Just e-mail me photos of Jeremy's tattoo. I'll find the sword, and I'll call you back.
E: Thank you, Caroline.
C: Bye. (She hangs up.)

"Need my help with anything?" Klaus asks Caroline with a smirk. "Nope." Caroline says and strides out of the house without looking at Klaus and I. Klaus stands there slightly amused and I shake my head with a quiet laugh. "Something amusing?" he asks and wraps his arms around me. "Oh, nothing." I say and he rolls his eyes at me with a smile.

Caroline and Tyler walk into the house. Caroline has a laptop in her hands while Tyler has the sword wrapped in a blanket. Klaus is sitting on the coffee table while I lean against the couch. "Well, if it isn't little orphan Lockwood. Come to show how laughably impotent you are against me?" Klaus asks Tyler with a smirk. "I'm just trying to help my friends find the cure." Tyler says then Klaus looks at me and rolls his eyes. Caroline sits on the couch, and Tyler reveals the sword from the blanket. "Found this in your attic." Tyler says. "And you think finding the sword brings you closer to the cure?" I ask and he shrugs. "You tell me. I was playing around with the handle on the ride over, and I found this." Tyler says and unwraps the leather on the top of the sword, revealing some sort of turning device. Klaus gets up and walks over to Tyler the asks, "And what do you think 'this' is?" "It's called a cryptex." Caroline says and Tyler looks at her. "I've seen The da Vinci Code. You turn the different sides to the different symbols to get the translation on the other side." she turns to the table, "And with the magic of the internet, Elena sent over these." she holds up print-outs of Jeremy's tattoo, "So now all we have to do is cryptex away." she sits down again, "If you happened to want to help, we wouldn't stop you." Caroline says and I sit down in a chair. "Right. Well, might I suggest using the magic of the internet to purchase an Aramaic-to-English dictionary from your nearest retailer." Klaus says and smirks. Tyler turns to Caroline and asks, "What's Aramaic?" She shrugs and looks at me. "It's a dead language. It hasn't been used since, like, biblical times." I say and Tyler nods. "Qetsiyah's native tongue, I'm guessing. You know, even if you had the best dictionary in the world, it could take days to translate." Klaus sits down on the arm of my chair. "Perhaps weeks. "In bas so-teen-too ara-ma-eet."" he says and I send him a confused look. "What does that mean?" I ask and Klaus grins. ""If only you spoke Aramaic."" he says and I shrug at Caroline and Tyler.
