Burger grease runs down my fingers and I struggle to grab a napkin from the bag.
"I don't remember Burger King being this greasy." I speak through a full mouth.
"It isn't usually," Nicole explains. "They just hired a bunch of teens who don't properly strain any of the meats."
"Shoot. It's that time of year already?"
"Yeah, a bunch of teens who graduated 3 months ago are finally being threatened by the boot." Nicky wipes her mouth on her sleeve. "Speaking of which... the crews taking a field trip again. To the amusement park."
"Oh yeah?" I sit up in the driver seat, resting an arm across the wheel. "Sounds like fun."
"It is. They try to get the crew to do something fun together every month or so. I just figured since it's not gonna be some lame party this time, you'd maybe wanna tag along?"
"I don't know, when?"
"Friday."
"Shit, why do you give me less than 2 days notice for these things?! How am I supposed to get that day off when it takes 2 weeks to request a single day off...?" I sigh.
"I told you to apply as a crew member full time and ditch that dead-end job of yours."
"Yeah, well, unless I'm offered a position I'm not gonna bother. I know how many applications you guys go through in a week. It's pointless."
"You know, Link thinks you're cool. I know he'd give us the thumbs up if we asked." She smirks, my heart speeds in excitement.
"What would I even do? I don't wanna be a full time crew maid, but I don't have any talents besides writing and reading half-assed Harry Potter fanfictions online."
"Maybe we'll have a fanfiction segment and it'll be your time to shine, nerd." She nudges my arm before finishing up our food and calling it a night.

Thursday morning, and my fuzzy llama pajama pants loosely cling from my hips as I dance around in the kitchen to the beautiful sound of bacon sizzling in the pan. (Unless you don't eat meat. Then pretend it's, I dunno, avocado or something vegans eat.) My dad strolls in through the doorway and pours himself some iced tea before disappearing back into his office. I yell over my shoulder to him.
"Do you want some?!" I cause him to stop in his tracks and take a quick glance back at me from the narrow hallway. He eyes the contents of the frying pan before meeting my eyes again.
"Sorry, bear, I really have to finish these documents. And I have a phone conference in-" he checks his watch. "- 5 minutes ago. Shoot. I gotta go."
I bite my lip and look back towards the stove, turning the dial all the way off. I guess I should be getting ready for work now as well.
My mind begins to wander to places it's been all too often recently. Whether or not I'll end up like my father, or even worse... like my mother. But I shake my head and scrape some bacon onto a paper towel before running up to my room to change into my work clothes.
Reaching the top of the stairs, I take a minute to choke for air. Yeah, walking at a reasonable pace is fine, no running. Wheeze.
Finally stumbling into my room, I approach my closet and swing it open. I grab my khakis and collared T-shirt and slide into them within seconds, and simply pull my hair back into a black clip. I pop a piece of bacon in my mouth.
"Dad?" I stand in the doorway to his office, cracking the door a bit before entering to make sure I wouldn't be interrupting anything. He sits in his seat, talking on the phone, scribbling notes on his papers frantically. I step in and tip-toe my way to his cluttered desk and place a plate of bacon beside his glass of iced tea that's now sweating all over his papers. I fold my bacon paper towel over and place his wet cup onto it to prevent it from possibly damaging anymore papers.
I slip out of the room and shove the remaining bacon into my mouth, jogging out of the front door.
A warm breeze and sunshine greet me. Until I step out onto the sidewalk and I'm nearly trampled by busy pedestrian tourists on my way to the car.
Good morning, LA.

"Hello, my name is (Y/n), thank you for calling Horizon, how can I assist you?" I lean back in my chair as I speak into the headset.
"Um, h-hi (Y/n), I called because I have an issue with my television." The voice of either a woman or a child radiates from the other line and I furrow my brow.
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. Could you explain to me what the issue is, and I'll do my best to help." Skeptical, i begin shuffling through my file cabinet on the different kinds of televisions we sell. "And I'll need to know what television you have, serial number, and if you have a warranty, I'll need the number on that as well."
"Um, yeah, my TV is stuck on one channel." I hear some muffled shuffling on the other line and an inaudible voice. "Yeah I just don't know, it won't turn off."
Suddenly, there's loud moaning in my ear. They started playing porn into my ear, and I press my eyes closed, slamming the filing cabinet drawer shut in frustration. The person in the cubicle next to mine shoots me a look and I roll my eyes. The kids start to giggle on the other end.
"Listen here, kid. You keep that crap up, you're not gonna live to experience the wonders you see in those videos." I hiss into the mic, "Have fun dying alone, you little snot."
My finger flies to the "end call" button and I immediately bury my face into my hand.
"I'm gonna pull all of my hair out by next week, I swear..." I mumble to myself. The phone rings again and I flinch at the sound.
"My name is (Y/n), thanks for calling Horizon. How can I help you?"
The sound of a child sobbing is the first thing I hear on the other end, and then an angry mother.
"Are you the woman who just threatened my son? An 8 year old child?!"
"Yeah, ma'am, your son just prank called us and ran pornographic audio into the receiver." I sigh. "When parental negligence leads to a deviant child wasting someone's time, people will go -"
"Negligent?! I am contacting your HR and getting your ass fired!!"
"Don't worry, lady. I quit anyway. Have fun." I stand up and tear the headset off of my ears. Maybe I will talk to Link about becoming a crew member after all. I pull my phone out and scroll through my contacts until I find Nicole's.
