Happy 2019! Sorry im late lol. Anyway heres a short chapter, im hella lame. Apologies in advance.
"Well, I happen to have a lot of knowledge on lazy boyfriends..." He jokes. He and Nicole begin chatting it up, but I can't seem to get one thought out of my head. But, it can't be accurate. It doesn't add up.
"Do you think he might be, uh-" I think about how to formulate my wording. "that he might be seeing someone else...?"
"Jesus, (y/n). Really?" Her posture goes from exhaustion to fuming of hostility.
"I know, I'm just being morbid. Sorry."
"No, I mean, seriously?" She shoots a glare that could sear through diamond. "After what happened the other day... You think that is an okay thing to suggest? That he's cheating on me?!"
Rhett seems to sit back and subtly scoot out of her blast zone.
"Okay, I said I'm sorry." I sigh, running my hand through my hair with so much pressure that I feel a few strands plucking and breaking.
"Whatever. I just think it's funny that that's what your mind goes to." She spits. I take a quick glance around the room and notice that the few people who are in the room with us are either blatantly watching or doing everything in their power to avoid looking in our direction. I start hoisting my bag over my shoulder so I can leave Nicky to stew in her own anger for a while. "But I shouldn't be surprised."
Pressing my eyes closed, I stand up and step away from the seat, but she stands too.
"Hey-" Rhett speaks from his seat, eyes darting between she and I. She interrupts him.
"Considering you know so much about cheating, you love it. "
"Cool it." Two more words from Rhett, but it's a demand accompanied by his form standing so abruptly his chair is propelled back onto the ground. Nicole is finally silencenced despite her eyes shooting a fierce look into my soul.
The threat of tears boils behind my eyes, but I hold them in the best that I can. Not here. Not in front of everyone. With one last look around the room and at Nicole, I rush out. The only thing I can hear is that of my frantic footsteps as I disappear through the doorway.
Passing people in the hall this way and that, I make a beeline for the exit. Then, I can drive home and sob over some Billie Eilish song on repeat. But as I make it halfway through the parking lot I hear the door shut again behind me. I twist to see if someone was entering or leaving, only to see Rhett jogging to catch up to my pace. Was he following me this entire time?
On instinct, I speed up a little to make it to my car just a little sooner.
"Hey, wait up." He heaves.
"I'm done here today anyway, I want to go home." I don't turn to look at him. I just need him to leave me alone before I lose it.
"She was wrong for saying what she did. You were just trying to help."
There's a mere couple of feet between my car and I, but my view of it is cut off by Rhett stepping in front of the door, leaning on it and crossing his arms. He looks down on me.
"Can I please get into my car." I hear my voice start to waver toward the end.
"Sure thing, but I'm not letting you finish your day on a negative note." He peers down at my pathetic posture as I look at anything but him. "Let's talk it out, kid. You're not blaming yourself, right?"
I try to step around him and grab the back door. Maybe I can hop in and climb into the driver seat. Before my fingers can make contact with the handle his hand intervienes yet again. My body kicks into panic mode. Pulse elavating and breathing out of control.
"Please move... Please let me get into my own damn car." For a moment he doesn't react to my plead. His eyes are wide and glued on me. While his hand does drop from the backdoor handle, he seems to be hesitant on whether or not to move. "Now!"
Raising my voice took the rest of the strength I was using to surpress my tears, and they begin falling freely. In addition to my anxiety, I now can't help but feel terribly embarrassed. Crying over some passive aggressive words hurled at me like I'm some child.
Rhett furrows his brows. After a second he finally moves away from my door and watches intently as I hop in, turn the stereo up, and peel out of that damned place. I don't have the heart to look back as I leave.
