it was your first day of school, and you were ever so nervous. your family just moved to avonlea, and you disliked the small town almost as much as you disliked your y/e/c eyes. it was too quiet, too small, too suffocating.

you smoothed out your soft blue dress, and buttoned your overcoat. mother had bought you a gorgeous gray wool coat, and it was your favorite. you just hoped the other girls would like it, and like you too.

"y/n, darling, time for you to go!" your mother called from the parlor. your family was one of the wealthier families in avonlea, and it got to your mother's head sometimes.

"goodbye, mother!" you called as you shut the door behind you. you trotted down the dirt road, not used to the country roads.

you arrived at the schoolhouse a few minutes late. "oh, fiddlesticks," you muttered as you hung up your coat.

"ah, our new student has graced us with her appearance," the teacher drawled sarcastically. you gulped.

"sorry to disturb, sir, it won't happen again," you said and ducked your head. the teacher scoffed. you ran to an empty seat, which happened to be next to a golden haired girl.

"hello, i'm ruby gillis," the young girl whispered. you smiled.

"i'm y/n y/l/n," you whispered in response, and turned your attention to the lesson. well, you tried to, but you could feel someone staring at you. you looked away from the blackboard, and your eyes landed on a boy.

his eyes were directly on you, and he had a confused look on his face. his head was tilted slightly to the left, because he rested it on his hand. you stared back at the boy, and he quickly payed attention to the lesson.

he's cute.

ruby must've seen you looking, because she whispered, "that's gilbert blythe. isn't he just dreamy?" she said with a happy sigh. you nodded slightly. ruby noticed that too. "but i call dibs." you turned to look at her.

"ruby, you can't call dibs on a person."

"yes you CAN!" ruby exclaimed and jumped up from her seat.

"ruby gillis!" the teacher exclaimed. "why are you yelling? blackboard, NOW!" ruby glanced at you, then started to slink up to the board.

"it was my fault," you said matter-of-factly. the teacher glanced at you.

"well then, you get up here instead." ruby returned to her seat with a grateful look on her face.

"i...mustn't...speak...unless...spoken...to," the teacher drawled as he wrote the words on the blackboard. you sighed and lowered your head. this day sucks. "now stand." and you did. for the whole day. no lunch for you.

at the end of the day, you were dismissed. you slowly walked outside, with your legs being very wobbly and whatnot. you bent down to get your milk from the stream when your knees buckled. you were going to fall in!...until someone grabbed your torso and pulled you back, away from the stream.

"hey, are you alright?" the person asked. you turned around to see who it was. it was that gilbert boy. you blushed slightly, mostly because he still had his hands around your waist.

"yes, i'm fine, just tired," you replied. he smiled at you. gosh, that smile is really cute.

"come, sit," he said and led you to a boulder by the stream. you both sat side by side. "don't mind mr. phillips. he's a real jerk most of the time." you nodded.

"he's fine. it was my fault. ruby just said something silly." you smiled weakly at him.

"what'd she say?" gilbert asked and smiled sneakily.

"well..." you began, but you started blushing. he gave you that confused look again. "she said that you're dreamy, and i might've agreed..." you trailed off. gilbert smiled. "...and then she said she called dibs on you. so i said that you don't call dibs on people and she got very uptight."

gilbert laughed. "she's always had a crush on me, but i'm interested in someone else." it was your turn to give him a confused look. "it's you," he said after much silence.

"but you barely know me!" you exclaimed. gilbert grabbed your hand and interlocked your fingers. you blushed and he laughed.

"well, i'd like to get to know you, if i may," he said. you smiled.

"you may," you replied. that night he walked you home, and you two were kindred spirits.
