finally having a soulmate was the best thing i've ever experienced. it was relaxing to finally have my other half.

gilbert and i hang out all the time now. we're basically joined at the hip. after school, he's either at my house, or i'm at his. we're rarely apart.

it was amazing having a soulmate who never gets hurt. the last large amount of pain i'd felt was when anne hit gilbert with her slate. ever since then, it's only been rare bruises...until tonight.

i woke up from a dreamless sleep coughing and wheezing. i couldn't get enough air to my lungs, and my heart started beating extremely fast. just as i woke up, my mother ran inside my room.

"quick, the blythe's house is on fire!" mother yelled and ran down the stairs with my father. i kept wheezing, and my limbs became extremely weak as i dashed downstairs.

my family rode as fast as we could to gilbert's house, and the cold air stung my cheeks as i kept coughing. my mother kept glancing at me, knowing gilbert's my soulmate, and that he's in extreme danger.

as we rode up to the blythe house, i jumped off the back of the wagon before it stopped moving. i fell to my knees and coughed for a spell. diana ran up to me and shook my torso.

"y/n! gilbert's stuck inside!!" she exclaimed, and i raised my head. tears filled my eyes.

"no," i said as my voice cracked. i rose to my feet and made my way to the door.

"don't go in there!" diana called from behind me.

"if gilbert dies, then i do too!" i yelled to her and clambered in the smoky house.

a cough erupted from my throat as i opened each door. mr. blythe had gotten out, but he had no idea where gilbert was.

finally i reached gilbert's door. it wouldn't open, and the handle was red hot. i heard gilbert cry out from inside the door; his hand burnt because i touched the handle.

"gilbert!" i called from behind the door. i heard shuffling, and then coughing.

"y-y/n?" a voice whimpered from inside. "why are you here? get out of here!"

"no! not without you!" i exclaimed and backed away from the door. i did the only thing i could: i kicked it as hard as i could. the hinges broke and the door fell.

i ran through the now-open doorway and saw gilbert. my eyes welled with tears when i saw his bruised and burnt face. i fell at his side and helped pick him up.

"go, please. i'll just weigh you down," gilbert coughed out. i shook my head.

"no. we're in this together. come on, let's go," i replied, and we started trudging to the front door. i almost dropped him a couple times, but we regained our balance.

we broke through the front door, and a wave of fresh air hit my face. gilbert took deep breaths, and we made our way to the crowd that was outside the house.

once i reached diana and my mother, gilbert slipped, and we both collapsed on the ground. my mother screamed, and billy and charlie sloan ran over to pick me and gilbert up.

"you saved me," gilbert whispered as we stood (with the help of billy and charlie).

"of course. you're my other half," i coughed out. then the boys pulled us towards the water buckets. halfway there, i heard a thump, and turned to see gilbert laying on the ground, with billy standing over him. i broke out of charlie's grip and stumbled over to my boy.

"gil. gil!" i yelled, gently shaking his shoulders. he was out cold. "billy, help!" i turned and yelled at the boy. charlie ran over, and both of them picked up gilbert by his shoulders. they carried him away, and diana pulled me in the opposite direction.

*time skip*
it's been a week since the fire, and i haven't left gilbert's side since. he hasn't woken up the whole week, so i cared for him that whole time.

it was saturday, and i was sitting at his bedside, dabbing a wet cloth on his forehead. his burn marks were healing, which meant they were healing on me too. i was still having trouble breathing, but then again, gilbert was too.

i left the room to go get some more water for the cloth. as i poured the water, my hands shook, and my heart broke.

i fell to the floor, my shoulders racking, with quiet sobs escaping my lips. the rag lay forgotten in the sink.

i prayed by myself, and back and forth. "please, he's my person. i cant live without him. please just let him wake up. i love him."

"you love me?" a soft voice said from behind me. i turned my head to see him standing there. gilbert's awake. i jumped up from the ground and rushed over to him. i slipped my arm around his waist to support him.

"you're awake," i said incredulously. he chuckled and nodded.

"yes i am. but you didn't answer my question," he teased. i blushed and brushed his curly hair out of his eyes.

"i do love you," i replied, and tears came to my eyes. "you don't understand how scary it was, not knowing if you were going to wake up or not. i can't do life without you." he just stared at me.

"i love you, y/n," he whispered, and he pulled me closer to him. he looked into my eyes, then at my lips. i wrapped my arms around his neck, and gently pulled him down. i pressed my lips onto his. he snaked his arms tighter around my torso, and deepened the kiss. it was our first of many.

he pulled away with a glimmer in his eyes. i slipped his arm around my shoulder.

"come, you need to rest," i said with a cough. he shook his head with a chuckle, but went me nevertheless.

once we reached his room, i helped set him down on his bed. as i turned to go, i felt his hand tug at my wrist, and he sent me falling back next to him. without saying anything, he pulled me into his arms, and i fell asleep with my soulmate.

my soulmate.
