"Okay! Okay! I lied. Yes, I did it!" Adriana spewed her words like daggers, glaring from me to my dad, and to Tyler, who wouldn't miss the occasion.

"Oh Adriana", her mom's voice came out of her tiny body, reminding all of that she was there. It was hard to notice her when she was standing next to her gigantic husband.

Dad looked at Joaquin Cortez with a triumphant smile. It was a subtle smile, like he was making the big man acknowledge that he had lost this round, but didn't want to rub salt into a wound. The air in the room had suddenly become still, unmoving, like time had frozen. A few seconds ago the air had been one giant ball of fire, daggers flew back and forth.

We were at Adriana's family house. Dad, Tyler and I had made the journey there a few days after Debbie had confessed Adriana's treachery. I hadn't said anything to Adriana about what I knew so when I told her my dad would like to meet her family, she was excited. She thought we were going to talk about the impending marriage. I knew there was nothing of that sort, but I made her believe I had accepted my 'fate'. That way, she wasn't prepared for what was going to happen. My dad said with his demands she would crack, and she did.

Adriana's confession had startled her mother. While her mother voiced her disappointment, her father was unmoving. It was hard to tell if he had known it was a one giant lie his daughter had spun to get me shackled to her.

He sighed, forcing hair through his nose rather noisily. Up to the point of Adriana's confession he'd been defending her, having a war of words with my dad about what a dignified person his daughter was. He'd rebuked suggestions that his daughter could be lying, blatantly insulting my dad. Dad had stood his ground, even when Adriana started crying openly. The last straw was my dad's demand that we take Adriana to our family doctor.

Adriana knew that was someone she couldn't bribe. Dr. Zeeman was in Stanton on standby. He would do the test on Adriana in the comfort of her own home. It was a demand my dad wouldn't let go dishonored and Adriana knew she had lost the battle. She confessed through tears that would make an observer believe it was her who had been lied to.

"Adriana, why?" her father asked finally, albeit softly. After what she did he wasn't even mad? Geez, some had it easy in life.

She sniffed and said nothing.

"Why would you lie about something like that?" he asked again.

"...Because I love him daddy. He was leaving me. I knew he was, I saw it in his eyes. He was leaving me and I hadn't done anything wrong. I was loyal to him, I was..." she said, more tears falling from her eyes.

I chastised myself for being moved by her tears. It was crocodile tears. It was probably the same tears she had cried when she'd 'lost' Michael's baby. It was recycled tears that she would probably recycle again for another sucker.

There was silence.

"Do I hear an apology coming Joaquin?"Dad asked. So much for winning with dignity. But heck, I didn't blame him. Adriana's dad owed us an apology.

"For what?" the man said angrily.

"Oh you forgot? A moment ago you called my son a wandering sperm with a giant head that is just looking for eggs to fertilize", dad said.

Gee. It stung the first time. I didn't want to hear it again.

"I will not apologize because he is exactly as a described him. You've overstayed your welcome Richard. Get out of my house and take your hooligans with".

"With pleasure", dad said flashing him a megawatt smile. "Don't be so harsh on her; the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. She's inherited the disease. It's in her genes".
