He couldn't make himself say it.
The time had come, and Nathan had the words on the tip of his tongue, but he knew whatever he was about to say wouldn't justify how he treated Keith before. But he had to say it; he had to stop leading Keith on, because they couldn't be together.
It felt like dying. Knowing they couldn't be together felt like dying.
"I'm . . ." Tears started to well up in his eyes. Nathan clawed his thumb right into his skin as if that could stop him from trembling. He could sense Keith's restlessness but they were once again in fade waves. Keith's good energy was depleting, and seeing happiness faded from his face murdered Nathan from the inside.
"It's okay," Keith said, and Nathan knew he was lying.
This would be over. This would be the end.
"I'm straight."
