Before I settled back to sleep, I motioned for Maple to join me and Beetle. She was still a bit sniffly from her argument with Brandon. She came over quietly and curled up beside me. Both she and Beetle were using my leg as a pillow. After the two of them fell asleep, I looked up.
Delilah was smiling in my general direction from her corner. So was Sting.
"What?" I mouthed to them. When I remembered that Delilah couldn't see, I averted my gaze sheepishly. Sting seemed to smile a bit wider.
"Sleep," he mouthed back at me. I nodded and closed my eyes.
I fell asleep that night with a weight on my heart, a headache, and two small children sleeping beside me. The sweetness of the moment didn't last because soon I was being sucked into a nightmare.
Again.
