Delilah and Beetle were somewhere nearby. I wanted to call out to them, but I couldn't draw attention to us, not after that ultimatum. Still unable to see, I staggered forward. My leg brushed the bumper of a car. I got down to my knees, intent to crawl underneath and hide.
When I felt a scaly surface brush my leg, I knew I wasn't the only one.
"This way," Delilah whispered to. I'd never get used to the voice of a snake...
"Where—" I whispered back. My eyes were still burning.
"I counted our steps. The van should be this way. Follow my lead."
"Torture, it is then," the megaphone voice concluded. "Men, check under the cars. Don't leave a single one unturned."
Well, that sucked ass.
