It's going to be all right! Merlin had told him. You and Gwen will rule this kingdom through kindness. And you're going to bring peace to Albion once more! The boy insisted.

But Arthur didn't - couldn't - believe him. Of course that, from Merlin's point of view, Arthur and Gwen were made for each other and they loved each other unconditionally, but only Arthur knew what the depths of his mind hid. Only he knew who really caused him to feel at home, who really gave him strength to move forward, who truly made him believe in himself.

Only he knew that the kind and just queen didn't even begin to compare with his clumsy Merlin. That the one who truly held his heart wasn't his wife at all. And Merlin was always there for him, through ups and downs, supporting him from behind, held his hand when he wobbled on his feet, straightened his head when his eyes were straying, drew open the curtains when he felt like he could bear the darkness no more. Merlin, always by his side, was his only friend, always there, one foot away and yet, Arthur needed him closer, so much closer.
