"Write about packing for a trip or unpacking from when you arrive home."

I like travelling, the anticipation, the preparation, the apprehension, the discovery and the disappointment, the tiredness, the astonishment at finding the unexpected and the displeasure in the absence of the expected. So it is in a different frame of mind that I pack a suitcase, a gamut of emotions running through me, with care I pack clothes, medicines, a book or two, and all those tiny little things which I might be able to carry without over burdening myself (my father insisted we carry our own luggage so that we learnt not to over pack stuff, now with suitcases on wheels it is easier, but still a very good piece of advice - if you cannot lift the suitcase to put it on the curb or take it off the taxi - you are in trouble).

For me packing of the suitcase (which is done just a few hours before the journey) is of suppressed excitement and subdued anticipation. It could be a car or a plane or a train (my favourite) journey, but then journeys are fun. I like the fact that we travel together, as strangers and yet are comfortable, each lost in their own bubble. Waiting at airports or bus stands, with irregular meals, boredom tipping at the edges or chatting away with company, each journey starts and ends differently, and of course, each journey, in itself is different. For as times vary and our moods change, our memories for that journeys are different.

I think a journey changes you a bit, you are never exactly the person who left when you return. Our experience with new people and new places makes a new person of us.

Suitcases, are a reminder of that.
